- Chapter 5 - A Cage of Her Own Making
Whether it was the lingering effect of the drug or memories buried deep within her mind, Xu Suxin suddenly felt a familiar sensation stirring through her body.
Lu Chenxing’s fingertips paused briefly as she leaned closer before slowly tracing downward along her skin.
The bathtub had not yet been filled, but the damp scent of moisture already lingered in the air.
Breathing unevenly, Xu Suxin asked,
“What did you do to me?”
Leaning close to her ear, Lu Chenxing whispered,
“I already told you.”
“I drugged you.”
“Xu Suxin… shouldn’t your body be responding by now?”
The moment her reason finally collapsed, only one thought drifted through Xu Suxin’s hazy mind.
This person had truly come back to settle old scores.
Xu Suxin woke again the following morning.
Her head throbbed violently, and her consciousness still floated somewhere between dreams and reality.
She tried to move.
Her body felt unbearably heavy.
Then she caught sight of the object fastened around her wrist.
In an instant, she was completely awake.
The room remained dim.
Only a few rays of sunlight slipped through the narrow gaps between the curtains, stretching into thin lines across the floor.
Across from her, hidden within the shadows, Lu Chenxing sat quietly with a coffee cup in hand, lightly brushing the rim with her fingertips.
“You’re awake?”
Memories rushed back all at once.
Xu Suxin’s chest tightened.
Yesterday, under the influence of alcohol and heightened emotions, she had acted recklessly.
Now that she was sober, faced with Lu Chenxing’s unreadable composure and the restraint fastened around her wrist, she experienced genuine helplessness for the first time.
A fresh cotton dressing covered the wound on Lu Chenxing’s neck.
Even so, nothing about her imposing presence had diminished.
She calmly continued reading through the documents before her without even raising her eyes.
Xu Suxin pressed her lips together.
Her throat felt dry.
She looked exhausted.
She had clearly not slept well.
But at this point, she truly had no alternatives.
Supporting herself with her elbows, she forced down her frustration.
“Lu Chenxing.”
“You’re really something. Is this some kind of hobby of yours?”
“You have amnesia.”
Lu Chenxing calmly turned another page.
“I’m treating you.”
“And helping you remember.”
“What if I never remember?”
“Then we’ll cut open your brain.”
“We’ll see whether you’re truly suffering from amnesia…”
“Or merely pretending.”
Xu Suxin laughed despite herself.
“So desperate for me to remember…”
“Could it be that you still can’t let me go?”
Lu Chenxing finally looked up.
One hand rested lightly atop the documents.
Those deep blue eyes were impossible to read.
“What exactly do you think I should be unable to let go of?”
Xu Suxin had only been probing.
Even the bartender at the racecourse knew Lu Chenxing had returned seeking revenge.
Everyone else who had wronged her had already paid the price.
Only Xu Suxin remained.
The cruelest.
The one most deserving of retribution.
Lu Chenxing intended to end the nightmare that haunted her every night.
Xu Suxin narrowed her eyes.
Her fingers silently curled into fists.
Meeting her gaze, Lu Chenxing asked,
“Are you thinking about how you’ll kill me after you get out?”
Xu Suxin curled her lips.
“You think you know me that well?”
“No.”
“I simply would.”
Xu Suxin ground her teeth.
She tried forcing herself to calm down and think of a solution.
Yet every slight movement caused another wave of pain to explode through her head.
Fragments of memory surfaced one after another.
Being pushed beneath the water.
Being lifted out again, drenched.
Then darkness swallowing everything.
She tugged lightly at the restraint around her wrist.
Only then did she notice the other end winding all the way to Lu Chenxing’s ankle.
The two of them were linked together.
Crossing one leg over the other, Lu Chenxing asked calmly,
“Can you still stand up?”
Whether she meant climbing out of bed while restrained—
Or rebuilding her life after bankruptcy—
The answer to either question was the same.
Extremely difficult.
Xu Suxin chose not to respond.
A knock sounded at the door.
A Filipino maid entered carrying breakfast.
Without sparing Xu Suxin a glance, she quietly placed the tray beside Lu Chenxing and stepped away.
It was as though Xu Suxin did not exist.
“If you want,” Lu Chenxing said evenly, “I can have it brought to your bedside.”
“You choose.”
“The food…”
“Or me.”
Xu Suxin answered immediately.
“The bedside.”
She wasn’t foolish.
With herself chained to Lu Chenxing, there was no possibility of escape.
Moments later, however, the tray was placed directly on the floor.
Xu Suxin frowned.
“What exactly is this supposed to mean?”
Was this meant to humiliate her?
To make her crawl across the floor like a dog eating scraps?
If so—
She would rather die.
Even years ago, when Lu Chenxing refused to eat, Xu Suxin had never treated her that way.
She merely threatened to feed her something else.
At that moment, barking echoed outside.
A large black dog rushed into the room.
Powerfully built and aggressive in appearance, it immediately bounded toward Lu Chenxing, wagging its tail obediently before lowering its head to eat from the plate.
Watching quietly, Lu Chenxing said,
“You won’t be eating anymore.”
Xu Suxin nearly laughed from anger.
As though she would willingly touch anything Lu Chenxing offered.
One glass of wine had already rendered her unconscious.
If she actually consumed food here, she doubted she would ever leave alive.
Lu Chenxing gently stroked the dog’s head.
“I wish you could be like this.”
“Lying here quietly while eating your meal.”
The dog remained perfectly obedient beneath her hand.
Halfway through eating, it even bared its teeth at Xu Suxin protectively.
The humiliation was unmistakable.
Xu Suxin sneered.
“So President Lu is admitting she used to be my dog?”
Still petting the animal, Lu Chenxing narrowed her eyes.
“Do I look like a dog to you?”
This time, Xu Suxin gave the safest answer possible.
“No.”
“If you really had been my dog…”
“How could I possibly have forgotten you?”
The words had an immediate effect.
A subtle change flickered through Lu Chenxing’s blue eyes.
Some of the hostility seemed to lessen.
She rose and left the room.
Only Xu Suxin and the black dog remained.
After finishing every bite from the bowl, the animal paced around before eventually jumping onto the sofa and watching Xu Suxin without blinking.
It was clearly guarding her.
When Xu Suxin stood and approached the window, the dog immediately barked furiously, exposing sharp white teeth.
Startled, she quickly forced herself to stay calm.
She removed one slipper and tossed it toward the doorway.
Instinctively, the dog chased after it.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Xu Suxin gave it a thumbs-up.
She threw the other slipper.
Again the dog hurried after it before returning proudly, waiting for praise.
Once more, she gave a thumbs-up.
The dog’s tail wagged happily as it dropped the slipper at her feet.
Suddenly—
Xu Suxin slapped it across the muzzle.
The dog froze in confusion.
Ignoring it, she walked over to the window while casually tossing the slippers again.
At the same time, she quietly assessed the outside.
Third floor.
The villa had four stories.
There was a swimming pool on the rooftop.
Jumping would almost certainly leave her with broken legs.
Only then did she realize—
This had once been the very master bedroom she herself had slept in.
After that, Lu Chenxing never returned.
Xu Suxin had no desire to see her anyway.
Food was brought again that afternoon.
She never touched it.
Missing meals for a day or two was nothing.
But if she consumed something she shouldn’t…
She might never survive long enough to be rescued.
As evening fell, the door lock finally turned.
The instant it opened, Xu Suxin threw a slipper toward the entrance.
The black dog immediately tensed, ready to pounce—
But stopped the moment it recognized Lu Chenxing.
Lu Chenxing’s gloomy gaze first settled on the dog.
Then it shifted toward Xu Suxin’s bare feet.
“Take it away.”
At her command, the black dog was dragged from the room.
Another pair of footsteps followed.
A doctor carrying a medical case entered behind Lu Chenxing.
Removing the bandage from Lu Chenxing’s neck, she frowned as she applied fresh medication.
The wound was clearly deep.
While the doctor replaced the dressing, the maid stepped forward and restrained Xu Suxin.
“What are you doing?”
she demanded, struggling.
Lu Chenxing replied calmly,
“Feeding you your main meal.”
“Lu Chenxing…”
“You’re insane.”
“This…”
Lu Chenxing looked directly at her.
“Is only the beginning.”
Anyone who had ever been imprisoned knew the truth.
The greatest torture was often not physical violence.
It was uncertainty.
The endless fear.
The constant guessing and imagining.
“Lu Chenxing.”
“You know perfectly well how strict the country’s drug laws are.”
But Lu Chenxing remained utterly composed.
Xu Suxin could feel it.
Everything Lu Chenxing was doing pointed toward a single goal.
She wanted Xu Suxin to consciously admit every crime she had committed in the past.
“Lu Chenxing.”
“I really don’t remember you.”
For the briefest instant, something flickered through those blue eyes.
Xu Suxin almost thought she saw satisfaction there.
She had always enjoyed watching Lu Chenxing lose control because of her.
Instead, Lu Chenxing merely gripped her chin.
“I don’t mind keeping you here longer.”
“I also wouldn’t mind watching you become addicted.”
She stared at Xu Suxin without looking away.
Everything she had done during the day…
Had merely been entertainment.
Only an appetizer.
Enraged, Xu Suxin grabbed a pillow and hurled it at her.
Lu Chenxing did not dodge.
Grinding her teeth, Xu Suxin spat out,
“Lu Chenxing.”
“One day, I’ll kill you.”
She was brought into the bathroom.
When Xu Suxin had designed this villa years ago, she had spared no expense.
Not for elegance.
But purely to indulge her own desires.
Dark marble walls reflected like cold mirrors.
Two enormous floor-to-ceiling mirrors faced each other, creating the illusion of an endless corridor.
The sunken bathtub rested at the center like a sacrificial altar.
Hidden lights illuminated only the bathing area.
Nothing here felt warm.
Everything radiated control.
Standing beside her, Lu Chenxing slowly pulled on a pair of gloves.
The latex stretched tightly across her slender fingers.
Then she bent down and lifted Xu Suxin into her arms.
The previous night, Xu Suxin had been unconscious.
She had no idea what Lu Chenxing had done.
But now—
She was completely awake.
“With so many witnesses present,” Lu Chenxing said quietly,
“Xu Suxin…”
“Your crimes are serious indeed.”
Xu Suxin gave a cold laugh.
“Really?”
“Then why not hold a banquet and do it in public?”
“You enjoy having an audience?”
The more people there were, the more opportunities she would have to escape.
“Don’t worry.”
Lu Chenxing calmly lifted her leg as though manipulating a puppet.
“Everyone believes Miss Xu boarded her flight.”
“They’ll only assume you’ve already fled overseas.”
“No one is coming to rescue you.”
The humiliating control made Xu Suxin instinctively raise her hand to strike her.
Before she could, Lu Chenxing caught her wrist.
Then pressed those fingers firmly against Xu Suxin’s own chest.
“You still like Xu Suxin.”
Left with no other options, Xu Suxin could only place all her hopes on one person.
Qian Shanyue.
She could only pray that sooner or later…
Qian Shanyue would realize she had disappeared.
