“At 10:30 p.m., I received a call from Lin Zehui.”

Sang Ning’s finger slid across the phone screen, and Gu Yezhou also looked at the screen, which showed the call Lin Zehui had made at 10:33 last night, lasting two and a half minutes.

“I don’t know which friend he was drinking with. We’ve been together for over a year, but I don’t know any of his friends. He has never introduced me to any of them. In his words, they’re not really friends, just work colleagues.”

Sang Ning rested her chin on her hand. “Later, I fell asleep, and that’s how you got that report. Someone gave me sleeping pills. Normally, I can sleep until dawn after taking them, but someone still woke me up at 10:30.”

Gu Yezhou nodded. “You said at the scene that you roughly knew who the murderer was, and that you suspected your blind date, Lin Zehui, right?”

Sang Ning clenched her fists. “Yes, I do suspect him. If he wasn’t guilty, why would he give me sleeping pills?”

This was also my oversight; I trusted him too much and fell into his trap.

Fortunately, she didn’t drink much last night, and the dosage wasn’t enough to keep her asleep all night.

Perhaps it was because she hadn’t drunk much that Lin Zehui was so eager to know if she had fallen asleep.

It’s better to ask her out than to stay home and let her hear what’s going on.

Sang Ning ran her fingers along the rim of the water glass, pondering what had happened last night.

“So, you didn’t pick up Lin Zehui last night?” Gu Yezhou asked.

Sang Ning: “No.”

Gu Yezhou asked in confusion, “Didn’t you hear anything in the latter half of the night either?”

Sang Ning shook her head. “I got back to Ping An Apartment very late because I was very anxious because I couldn’t contact Lin Zehui. I didn’t get back until about 3 a.m. I was very tired when I got back and fell asleep quickly.”

Gu Yezhou nodded, “At three in the morning, and unable to find anyone, it was indeed very exhausting, which caused you to overlook the fact that you had been drugged.”

There was a moment of silence.

Gu Yezhou then asked, “What do you think of the deceased, Shi Li?”

“I don’t have any opinion. In my preconceived notion, he’s just a homebody.”

Sang Ning felt disgusted whenever she thought about Shi Li collecting her personal clothing.

Her composure faltered for a moment, her fists clenched so tightly they cracked.

Gu Yezhou had seen all of this. “Didn’t you notice before that your underwear was missing?”

Sang Ning shook her head. “I usually come back in the evening to wash and dry the clothes, and then I take them down early the next morning. I only dry the clothes during the day when I’m resting. Captain Gu should have seen it today.”

As for missing clothes… well, it’s quite common for a few pieces of clothing to go missing in a place like Ping An Apartment.

“A gust of wind could have blown it away somewhere; I really never imagined it would be stolen by my neighbor.”

Gu Yezhou picked up the lipstick-shaped recorder, gently twisted it between his thumb and forefinger, and the recording ended.

“Alright, I’ve got everything I wanted to know. So, is Forensic Doctor Sang planning to go back to Ping An Apartment tonight?”

“I have nowhere else to live besides there.”

Sang Ning leaned forward slightly, looked at Gu Yezhou, and smiled, “If Captain Gu wants to let me stay for the night, I don’t mind.”

“Okay.” Gu Yezhou stood up. “Forensic Doctor Sang, shall we go home together?”

Sang Ning didn’t expect that this man would actually take her casual remark seriously.

Gu Yezhou placed the lipstick-shaped recorder in his desk drawer and locked it.

As soon as they reached the police station entrance, Sang Ning smiled and said, “Captain Gu, if you’re going home, you can go back first. I need to go back and get the autopsy report done for you, don’t I?”

“There’s no rush.”

Sang Ning shook her head. “Solve the case first, then we can talk about our business?”

Upon hearing the word “us,” Gu Yezhou felt much of the gloom dissipate: “How long?”

I had heard before that the longest time Sang Ning could produce an autopsy report was six hours, and the fastest was one hour.

“Does Captain Gu intend to wait for me?”

Without a doubt, Gu Yezhou shrugged.

Without further ado, Sang Ning turned and went back to the forensic room.

Lu Lin was still there at this hour, yawning, “Why are you back again? Aren’t you going to have a meal with the new captain?”

“I’m not in their group, why should I eat?” Sang Ning forced herself to walk to the dissection table.

Lu Lin turned her head and said, “It was bound to happen sooner or later. Otherwise, why would Yancheng need two forensic doctors like us? Isn’t it just to pair one with each team? I really don’t want to be paired with that new team leader. He looks like he’s not someone to mess with. Look at you, a young lady, still working at this hour. You’re coming back to write an autopsy report, aren’t you?”

Sang Ning ignored them, put on a mask and gloves, turned on the recording equipment, and solemnly addressed the camera: “First autopsy, case number: 2025 Criminal Technology 1210, deceased: Shi Li, male…”

After carefully examining the entire body, Sang Ning’s gaze fell on the back of the deceased’s head.

The blood clot had scabbed over, but something was slightly protruding inside. She picked up a razor and slowly removed the deceased’s hair, discovering several lenses around it.

Then, she gently moved the tweezers in her hand inward, pinching out the protruding part, with sticky blood staining it.

“Lu Lin.”

Whenever Sang Ning makes a new discovery, she likes to show it to Lu Lin. Of course, if her assistant is around, she will definitely share it with her assistant first. However, every time she shares it, her assistant will experience stomach discomfort.

If you want to become a forensic doctor, you’ll have to face these things sooner or later. Unfortunately, her assistant has no interest in this and only comes to help her occasionally.

“Tell me more,” Lu Lin said, arms crossed, leaning against the glass door as he looked at her.

Sang Ning examined the object held by the tweezers closely. One of the protruding corners was free of bloodstains and even shone with a white light. “Look at this thing.”

Lu Lin squinted. “Old Sang, I’m nearsighted.”

Suppressing his excitement, Sang Ning quickly placed the new discovery on the instrument next to him for testing.

“There were many grayish-white flakes in the deceased’s hair. I originally thought they were just ordinary dandruff, but now it seems that they are powdery residue from cigarette ash.”

Lu Lin raised an eyebrow. “It’s normal for men to smoke.”

“Who smoked their cigarette and ended up with blood on the back of their head?” Sang Ning rolled her eyes as she carefully cleaned away the bloodstains. Soon, a piece of glass-like material appeared before her.

“This murderer is incredibly strong,” Lu Lin clicked his tongue. “Or maybe the tool he used was too weak and of poor quality.”

“There are obvious sintering pores. This thing is an ashtray.” Sang Ning frowned slightly. “But… Shi Li doesn’t smoke.”

Lu Lin waved his hand. “Alright, leave the investigation to the criminal investigation team. You, write your report and go home to rest early. I’m off work now.”

Sang Ning ignored him and went back to the body. After examining it again, she began stitching it up.
