- Chapter 5 - Faces Lie, Words Don't
“Of course it’s true. When have I ever lied to you?” Sang Ning’s tone softened considerably.
That was said without any sincerity.
Sang Ning didn’t care. Anyway, once she returned the betrothal gifts and gold jewelry, she would have nothing to do with this man surnamed Lin anymore.
The phone kept vibrating in her ear. Sang Ning glanced at it; it wasn’t hers.
Lin Zehui remained squatting in front of her without getting up, his gaze fixed on her arm in a daze.
Sang Ning frowned: “Not answering the phone?”
“It should be…it should be Xiaoyue. Ningning, I’m leaving now. I’ll come see you again later.” Lin Zehui’s hurried departure resembled that of someone fleeing a disaster.
The older woman looked puzzled: “What’s wrong with this young man? Didn’t he say he was going to take you home?”
Sang Ning chuckled: “Auntie, you can’t judge a person by their appearance or what they say. How do you tell if someone is a human or an animal?”
She got up and walked towards the machine to collect the report, leaving the older woman there muttering, “What does this mean?”
It was already 7 p.m. when I returned to the police station with the report.
As I passed by the criminal investigation team, I happened to bump into Gu Yezhou.
At the scene of the crime, Sang Ning didn’t have time to pay attention to Gu Yezhou at all.
Even though the two communicated several times, her attention was entirely focused on the deceased, Shi Li.
Finally, it’s hard to believe that Shi Li is actually this kind of person.
“Forensic Doctor Sang, I heard you went to get your marriage certificate today?”
Just as Sang Ning was about to explain to Gu Yezhou, she heard a sly voice in her ear.
Lu Lin, wearing a white lab coat, took off his blue mask and said, “Getting your marriage certificate is such a big deal, why didn’t you tell me? I could have been happy for you as your brother sooner.”
He walked over to Sang Ning and nudged her arm with his elbow. “Tell me, what are this guy’s conditions? What does his family do? What are his parents like? Let me tell you, when it comes to marriage, you can’t just look at the man; you have to look at his parents. If the parents have a tense and disharmonious relationship, the marriage will end sooner or later.”
Sang Ning twitched the corner of her mouth. Was it really okay to say that in front of the person involved?
Lu Lin was actually quite good-looking, and she was initially considered by Sang Ning. However, the longer they spent together, the more she realized that she and Lu Lin were just like best friends.
Unfortunately, this man had a mouth that was particularly talkative, and he continued rambling on:
“By the way, when are you planning to hold the banquet? I have to wait until I get paid to prepare a red envelope for you. Sigh, it’s really upsetting to talk about. Another murder case has occurred. I wonder if I’ll get the reward if this case is solved.”
Sang Ning raised her hand to interrupt, “Well, let’s forget about the banquet. We probably won’t be holding one anytime soon.”
She kept looking at Gu Yezhou as she said this.
If you notice that the handsome guy’s face doesn’t show any other changes in expression, does that mean he agrees?
“Why? Is the man too poor?” Lu Lin shook his head repeatedly. “My dear forensic doctor Sang, your conditions are not bad either. How can you find a poor guy to be your husband? I suggest you divorce him and come with me. Anyway, we’ve been together for so many years.”
“Get out.” Sang Ning glared at him.
My scalp feels tight, really tight.
The temperature around her seemed to have dropped significantly. Sang Ning felt that Gu Yezhou might be angry.
“Alright, I’m not teasing you anymore. I heard the deceased was your neighbor, so you have to recuse yourself from this case.” Lu Lin got down to business, and his expression became serious.
“No need,” Gu Yezhou said.
Lu Lin looked at Gu Yezhou in surprise, “New Captain Gu, do you have so much power? You know the deceased was her neighbor, and the two even knew each other. In particular, her neighbor did such a perverted thing!”
All three of them knew exactly what was going on.
“It’s alright, leave this to me. I have high hopes for Dr. Sang’s abilities.” Gu Yezhou’s gaze fell on Sang Ning’s bright face. “I believe that as a public official, Dr. Sang will not hide anything unnecessary.”
Sang Ning immediately understood what the man meant; she had come to discuss this matter with Gu Yezhou.
“I need to talk to Captain Gu. Can you please get lost?”
Sang Ning was not polite at all when speaking to Lu Lin.
Lu Lin sighed and poked Sang Ning’s shoulder with a finger: “You heartless scumbag.”
“Get lost!” Sang Ning was almost ready to kick him.
After seeing Lu Lin quickly leave, Sang Ning took out the report from her bag. “This is my test report. It contains benzodiazepines, which is why I didn’t hear anything last night.”
Gu Yezhou took the report, glanced at it briefly, then folded it up and put it in his pocket.
“After get off work, instead of talking about cases, let’s talk about something else?”
Sang Ning looked at him in astonishment, “What else? There’s no time to leave work until the case is solved. I remember you used to say that often when you were in the provincial department, Captain Gu, right?”
Just two years ago, Sang Ning was helping with autopsies at the provincial department. She happened to pass by Gu Yezhou’s office once. At that time, she didn’t see his face, but only heard his loud voice full of anger.
Nothing can compare to his current handsome and magnetic voice.
For a moment, Sang Ning thought she had mistaken someone for someone else.
Who knew that the person she casually picked up and married at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau would turn out to be the captain of the Criminal Investigation Team!
Gu Yezhou raised an eyebrow slightly. “Forensic Doctor Sang seems to know me quite well.”
Sang Ning stood there, at a loss. “Um, shall we find somewhere to talk?”
What should we talk about? Besides the case, she really didn’t want to talk about anything else.
This is absolutely infuriating!

Once the door closed, only the two of them remained.
Gu Yezhou poured Sang Ning a glass of water. “I know you might feel awkward talking about this in the police station, but legally speaking, our relationship is legitimate.”
Sang Ning blushed, “No…it’s nothing. If Captain Gu minds, we can terminate our legal relationship.”
“In the short term, it shouldn’t be.” Gu Yezhou sat down opposite Sang Ning.
The moment Sang Ning looked up, their eyes met.
She thought she saw a smile in Gu Yezhou’s eyes?
His eyes were slightly curved, though only by a tiny arc. She couldn’t be mistaken, could she?
You laughed, didn’t you?
Sang Ning blinked and asked instinctively, “Why?”
“Being a forensic doctor is a great job. If you get stood up because of your profession, it means that person is short-sighted and lacks vision.” Gu Yezhou took a sip of tea. “I think it’s remarkable to be able to speak for the deceased.”
This was the second time Sang Ning had heard these words from another person.
The first one was her savior, and also the person she would feel guilty towards for the rest of her life.
When she chose to become a forensic pathologist instead of an orthopedic surgeon, Professor Chen was the one who unconditionally supported her.
Professor Chen is the dean of the medical school, and her son is the one who donated her corneas.
This matter remained buried deep in her heart, something she dared not think about or face for a long time.
Even though nine years have passed…
