- Chapter 3 - The Rumors of Ping An Apartment
Just as she was about to take out the evidence bag, the man next to her handed her the bag.
Gu Yezhou frowned slightly. “What was the time of death?”
Sang Ning pointed to the excrement that had stained the deceased’s pants, feet, and wrists, saying, “When the muscles of the whole body are relaxed, the sphincter muscles lose control, which is what we commonly call incontinence, and this situation will occur.”
She pressed her hand around the corpse and said, “The face is bluish-purple, and rigor mortis is all over the body. It has probably been 10 to 12 hours.”
He glanced at his watch. “It’s 4:10 p.m., which means the deceased must have died between 6 and 8 a.m. this morning.”
“Since the time of death was probably in the morning, why did you say you didn’t hear any noise last night?” Gu Yezhou asked.
Sang Ning looked at Gu Yezhou with a firm gaze, “Because the process of the deceased’s death was extremely long, if we arrived at the deceased’s home around three or four in the morning, there are three options: 1. Knock on the door; 2. Unlock the door; 3. Climb through the window.”
Although we live on the second floor, any one of these three points is enough to cause quite a commotion.
Captain Gu probably doesn’t know that the soundproofing in Ping An Apartment is extremely poor; even the slightest noise can be very loud, which is what puzzled me.
Gu Yezhou nodded. “Were you too tired last night, so you slept very soundly and didn’t hear anything?”
Sang Ning shook her head. “No, you may not know the rumors about Ping An Apartment. It’s known as Hell Apartment because it’s often haunted and people often die here. I rented it here simply because it was cheap.”
Therefore, I am a light sleeper, and I will wake up at the slightest noise, even if it’s just the creaking sound of a window that isn’t closed properly.
Ning became blind shortly after birth, so her senses are much more acute than those of a normal person.
Sang Ning didn’t want to talk about this past. She lived in fear for eighteen years in the countryside, locked in a cage every day, living a life that was neither human nor animal.
She kept trying to remember exactly where that rural area was.
Every night in her dreams, all she sees is endless darkness, along with that sharp, sarcastic voice and cold sarcasm.
“If you’ve always been a light sleeper, and you didn’t hear anything last night, did you take any sleeping pills? From what you just said, your sleep isn’t very good. Have you thought about improving it?” Gu Yezhou didn’t know why, but after hearing what Sang Ning said, his heart felt a tightness, making it hard for him to breathe.
Sang Ning’s salary is not low, and to save money, he doesn’t need to live in such a place.
Could there be another reason why she lives here?
“No…” Sang Ning squatted down, staring blankly at the rope marks on the deceased’s limbs.
Gu Yezhou followed the gaze and squatted down, picking up the knot in the rope and examining it. “This is a mountaineering knot. Do you know if the deceased knew any mountaineering enthusiasts?”
“No,” Sang Ning answered decisively.
She knew it was a mountain climbing knot, and the moment she saw it, a person unconsciously came to mind.
Gu Yezhou noticed that Sang Ning’s expression was off and asked, “Do you know her?”
Sang Ning looked up at Gu Yezhou, biting her lip tightly behind her mask. “I… I think I know who the murderer is.”
“So fast! Who is it, Forensic Doctor Sang? Do you know him?” Xiao Zhang asked, his face filled with surprise, but even more so with joy.
Sang Ning shook his head, “It’s just a guess, I can’t be sure. There were no mountaineers around the deceased, but there were some around me.”
“What do you mean?” Xiao Zhang asked, puzzled. “You can’t exactly say that your friend killed your neighbor, can you? Why would someone kill your neighbor when there’s no grudge between them?”
“Yes, why…” Sang Ning asked, puzzled, looking at Gu Yezhou, “Could we take the body back first? I need to examine it further.”
Seeing that Sang Ning was unwilling to talk about it, Gu Yezhou didn’t ask any further questions. “Okay, but could you give me a copy of the proctor’s notes from the forensic doctor’s exam?”
He walked to the door and pointed to the surveillance camera at the door of room 203.
Sang Ning nodded. “I checked on the way here, and there was no sign of the murderer. They probably didn’t go up this staircase to the east.”
“Okay.” Gu Yezhou then walked towards the inner room.
When Gu Yezhou arrived at Ping An Apartment, he wondered if he had come to the wrong place.
Apart from a security camera at the traffic light 200 meters in front of the intersection, there are no security guards or surveillance cameras inside this apartment building.
There were no surveillance cameras on the stairs when I went upstairs.
The walls are mottled and there are water seepage marks everywhere on the ceiling. It is obviously an abandoned apartment, but it is still supplied with water and electricity, probably because the developer has not completely abandoned the place.
“There were no signs of a struggle or fingerprints at the scene, and it was cleaned very thoroughly. In addition, we found that all the valuables in the deceased’s home had been taken away, which strongly suggests that it was a murder for money,” Xiao Zhang reported, following behind Gu Yezhou.
“By the way, Forensic Doctor Sang, do you know if the deceased had a girlfriend or anything like that? Did you know her?”
Sang Ning stood there, pondering the events of the previous night.
When Xiao Zhang’s voice came again, she shook her head. “As far as I know, he doesn’t have a girlfriend. He’s a homebody. As far as I know, he has a very narrow social circle and spends most of his time at home.”
Gu Yezhou listened to Sang Ning’s explanation outside, looked at the underwear in the closet, and fell silent.
“That’s strange. If he didn’t have a girlfriend, what’s going on with all this underwear in his closet, and the smell of it? Could the deceased have been an underwear thief?” Xiao Zhang muttered as he went inside.
Sang Ning’s heart skipped a beat when she heard about stealing underwear.
She quickly walked into the deceased’s bedroom and bumped into Gu Yezhou, who was putting underwear into an evidence bag.
Sang Ning’s gaze immediately fell on the evidence bag, her pupils contracting slightly.
Even through the thin mask, Gu Yezhou could see Sang Ning’s astonishment.
He stood there, asking nothing, waiting for Sang Ning to speak for herself.
He already had a guess in his mind, but he didn’t want it to be what he thought.
If the murderer is Sang Ning’s friend, what would she do?
Would you choose to cover it up?
Sang Ning turned to look at the bedroom window, and then saw the clothes fork next to it. Was there anything she didn’t understand?
She took the evidence bag from Gu Yezhou’s hand, took a deep breath, and said, “No need to check, all the underwear here is mine.”
“What?!” Xiao Zhang was inspecting the scene back and forth, afraid of missing anything. He was in the bathroom when he heard Sang Ning say that the underwear was hers!
His loud voice immediately caught the attention of Lao Chen from the nearby technical squadron. “Xiao Chen, if you really can’t handle it, go outside. Can you please stop causing trouble here? You’re an investigator, why don’t you go ask the neighbors in this apartment building instead of getting involved in this mess!”
