- Chapter 2 - Someone Died Next Door
Sang Ning parked her electric scooter downstairs at Ping An Apartment Building.
Fortunately, there weren’t many onlookers here, so there was no chance of taking photos and posting them online.
Most of the residents in this apartment are elderly men and women. They don’t like to join in the fun because there’s a bad rumor about the apartment being haunted.
In addition, most of them were driven out by their relatives or had no relatives and were begging on the streets.
Living here, at least the rent is cheap, and there’s a safe haven.
The Ping An Apartment was originally built to provide elderly care. The entire apartment building is constructed in a U-shape with four interconnected corridors, making it very convenient to visit other apartments.
Sang Ning quickly went upstairs, her lively and cheerful personality completely different from before; her voice sounded much calmer. “What’s the situation at the scene?”
She took out the key to room 203, opened the door, and in front of all the police officers, removed the red scarf hanging around her neck.
“The scene…” Xiao Zhang was about to speak when he saw Sang Ning open the door and exclaimed in surprise, “Forensic Doctor Sang, you live here?”
Xiao Zhang felt that the world was magical, a forensic doctor living in a haunted apartment?
Moreover, the apartment is 15 kilometers away from the police station. Doesn’t she get tired of commuting to work by electric scooter every day?
“Yes, I live here. Don’t bring up my affairs. Tell me what happened next door first. Where is the person who reported the crime?”
Sang Ning quickly put the red booklet from her pocket into the drawer, then closed it, turned around and picked up the survey box that was placed by the entrance.
“Oh, the person who reported the case is the cleaning lady from this apartment building. She’s waiting outside.” Looking at the red marriage certificate, Xiao Zhang couldn’t help but ask, “Did you… go to get your marriage certificate today?”
It seems he disturbed Dr. Sang’s good day.
Getting a marriage certificate is such a big event, but it turns out to be a murder case. How unlucky!
“What did the cleaning lady say? What about the new team leader?” Sang Ning avoided the question about marriage, closed the door, and walked to the door of room 204 with her survey kit.
The first thing you see is a puddle of excrement in the center of the living room.
A small swarm of flies buzzed around the excrement.
Her room was number 203, which was right next door, just a short walk away.
Apart from the puddle of excrement beneath the deceased, the scene was as if it had been ransacked, swept clean.
Even the most basic tea set was deliberately taken away.
“I don’t know. I’ve already notified him. He just arrived in Yancheng and should still be on his way.” Xiao Zhang scratched his head.
Sang Ning nodded in understanding. The person had just been transferred here and a murder had occurred. He might still be at the high-speed rail station right now, and it would take some time for him to get here.
Unlike her, the Civil Affairs Bureau is only three kilometers away, very close by.
She asked, “Was the cleaning lady the first to discover the body?”
Xiao Zhang nodded, “Yes, and it’s very strange. Someone died here, but none of the neighbors have come out to visit. This is quite different from usual.”
“Normal.” Sang Ning put on gloves and shoe covers, entered the scene, and put the investigation kit aside. “The coffee table has been wiped clean, and there are no stools around. The murderer most likely stood on the coffee table to hang the person.”
She looked at the corpse in front of her and sighed: “The deceased: Shi Li, age: 30, worked in the comics industry, rarely interacted with people and had no friends.”
“That’s great! You know the deceased. This case will definitely be solved soon.” Xiao Zhang said with delight.
Sang Ning shook her head. “It’s difficult because his social circle is too small, and he never offends anyone. I can’t imagine who would want to kill him, and tie him up in such a cruel way, and then hang him on the fan.”
“How can you tell that the deceased was first bound and then hung from the fan?”
Gu Yezhou’s footsteps were very light, and his magnetic voice rang out from the doorway, causing Sang Ning to freeze in shock.
She opened her eyes wide, not daring to look at the man at the door.
Why does that voice sound so familiar?
“You are? The new team leader?” Xiao Zhang’s eyes widened. “I didn’t expect you to be so young. I’m Xiao Zhang from Group 1. You can call me Lao Zhang if you like. I look a bit older than you.”
Gu Yezhou nodded slightly. “It’s alright. Let’s talk about the situation on the ground first.”
Xiao Zhang: “According to the person who reported the case, they did not see any suspicious persons at the time. They usually push a cart upstairs to collect garbage. However, the smell on the second floor was particularly strong today. When they discovered the body, the door was slightly ajar. They pushed the door open and found the body, so they immediately reported it to the police.”
As Gu Yezhou listened, he walked inside, looking at the corpse in front of him whose limbs were bound and whose hands and feet were tied together. Directly below was a pile of excrement, and a bunch of insects were flying around.
Seeing that the woman beside him remained expressionless, he asked, “Should we put the body down for examination first?”
Sang Ning’s thoughts were pulled back, and he said seriously, “Okay, there is blood on his forehead, so it is possible that he was first attacked and rendered unconscious, then tied up, and finally hanged on the fan.”
Xiao Zhang clapped his hands and said, “Who says it isn’t? Besides, this murderer is really weird. When the cleaning lady found it, the fan was still on. I was afraid it would splatter everywhere when I got to the scene, so I turned off the fan.”
“The fan is on?” Sang Ning and Gu Yezhou questioned almost simultaneously.
Xiao Zhang nodded, “Yes, it was open.”
Sang Ning said in a deep voice, “In other words, the murderer waited until the victim had completely died before leaving the scene.”
Gu Yezhou continued, “Yes, if the fan had been turned on before leaving, his excrement would have been scattered everywhere, but the surrounding area would have remained exceptionally clean.”
“Yes.” Sang Ning watched as the two police officers carefully stepped on stools to lower the deceased off the fan, their arms trembling slightly. “Besides, the murderer must have been exercising regularly.”
Gu Yezhou looked at Sang Ning with a smile in his eyes; he hadn’t expected to see her here.
I saw her electric scooter downstairs at Ping An Apartment just now, and for a moment I thought it was just a coincidence.
“Tell me your thoughts.”
Sang Ning’s gaze remained fixed on the corpse, completely oblivious to the burning gaze directed at her from the side.
She first brushed away the bloodstains on the deceased’s forehead to examine them, and then gently turned the sides of the deceased’s head to observe them closely.
“The skull had been struck hard, and the bleeding extended to the back of the neck.” His fingers moved down, gently tracing the back of the deceased’s neck with his fingertips. The blood had dried, but the faint marks of rope were still visible.
“The crisscrossing ligature marks on the back of the neck indicate that the murderer first struck the victim’s head with a blunt object, then switched to this type of rope, wrapped it around his neck, strangled him, and then hung him from the fan.”
Sang Ning paused for a moment, looked up at the fan, then looked down at the excrement on the ground.
“What’s wrong?” Gu Yezhou asked.
Sang Ning’s gaze slowly moved upwards, looking at the sunken sides of the deceased’s face and the tongue hanging out.
She took out tweezers from the survey kit, gently pinched the tongue, and slowly lifted it up.
There is a very thin cotton thread at the corner of the mouth and where the tongue touches the skin.
