Master, That's My Wife and My House! - Chapter 20
The self-rescue device that he pulled out was hot, which surprised Chen Feng. He quickly opened it to take a look and then said in astonishment, “It’s reacting.”
Jiang Rong adjusted her black-rimmed glasses, then leaned closer and said, “Isn’t a chemical reaction a normal thing? What’s so strange about it?”
“It’s not surprising that there was a reaction, but the reaction happened too late.” Chen Feng frowned and said, “I conducted experiments at the factory and there was no reaction, but it reacted on the way. This thing is meant to save people. If it delays for so long, by the time it reacts, the person will be dead. What’s the point of having it?”
Jiang Rong immediately understood Chen Feng’s thoughts and smiled, saying, “Looks like you’re not very good at chemistry!”
“…I graduated from a vocational high school.” Chen Feng chuckled awkwardly.
Jiang Rong nodded. “It’s alright. Let me explain. Chemical reactions take time. The amount of potassium superoxide you breathe through your mouth and nose will take even longer to react. So what you made is fine; it’s just that you didn’t consider it properly in the design.”
With just a casual remark from a professional, Chen Feng immediately realized what was going on. He looked somewhat helpless and sighed, saying, “Then this thing is essentially ruined by me.”
Jiang Rong shook her head. “Not really. You’ve already designed the whole thing. It just needs a little improvement. I suggest you add a nascent oxygen device inside so that users can get through the initial chemical reaction period.”
“A nascent oxygen device?” Chen Feng wasn’t a professional after all, and he was a little confused when he heard Jiang Rong use this technical term.
“The oxygen candle is pretty good.” Jiang Rong said as she took the self-rescue device from Chen Feng, then waved to Chen Feng, signaling him to come into the lab with her.
After entering the laboratory, Jiang Rong rummaged around and found a piece of potassium superoxide in a storage cabinet, which she then installed into Chen Feng’s self-rescue device.
After installing the potassium superoxide, they started searching again and found a piece of grayish-white oxygen candle in another storage cabinet.
“This is an oxygen candle. When lit, it will not consume oxygen, but will instead produce oxygen. One complete oxygen candle is enough for dozens of people to use for a day,” Jiang Rong casually explained to Chen Feng. She then placed the oxygen candle into the self-rescue device and readjusted the inside of the device, installing a filter.
After everything was settled, Jiang Rong handed the self-rescue device to Chen Feng, saying, “Try it, it should be fine.”
“Is that all?” Chen Feng took the self-rescue device, played with it in his hand for a moment, and then put on the nose clip and bit down on the gag without hesitation.
Unlike when he was doing experiments in the factory, Chen Feng didn’t feel suffocated this time and was able to breathe again quickly. After wearing it for a while, a burning sensation rushed to his throat, making him feel choked.
But this feeling brought a smile to Chen Feng’s face, because the potassium superoxide was already working and the self-rescue device was functioning normally.
After breathing for two minutes to make sure the self-rescue device was working properly, Chen Feng took it off. The moment he took it off, he gagged.
This stuff really smells awful; it has a strong brine odor and burns your throat. But having this stuff can save your life in case of an emergency underground, so the slightly off taste doesn’t really matter.
“Jiang Rong, thank you so much!” Chen Feng grabbed Jiang Rong’s hand and thanked her gratefully. “You’ve really helped me a lot. I thank you on behalf of myself and my fellow miners.”
Jiang Rong was somewhat startled when Chen Feng suddenly grabbed her hand, but she quickly recovered and didn’t feel anything was wrong. On the contrary, she felt that Chen Feng was a very sincere person.
Chen Feng then realized that his actions had been somewhat presumptuous. Although the separation between men and women was not as strict in this era as it was in feudal society, it was still impolite to grab a girl’s hand so abruptly.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, I… I got too excited.” Chen Feng quickly apologized. Jiang Rong had helped him, but he had acted so rashly. If others saw this, they might gossip about Jiang Rong.
Jiang Rong smiled and said, “It’s okay, I understand how you feel. Sometimes when I do an experiment and it succeeds, I feel the same way you do.”
“Long live understanding!” Chen Feng said shamelessly, then added, “Jiang, I won’t say thank you. I need to get this to the coal mine right away. Whether it works or not, I’ll treat you to dinner!”
Jiang Rong smiled and said, “You don’t need to take this to heart. I’m happy to be able to do my part for the miners.”
Chen Feng sighed that even now, people still have a sense of patriotism and concern for the people. Without saying much, he and Jiang Rong refilled the potion and then took their leave, heading straight for the Wanhuai Coal Mine.
When Chen Feng arrived at the Wanhuai Coal Mine, it was already noon. He hadn’t eaten and was quite hungry, but he didn’t know exactly when Wu Wenhua had died.
Even for a reborn person, who can remember the exact time of an accident decades ago? Being able to give a rough account of the accident is already quite good, so the sooner this self-rescue device is delivered to Wu Wenhua, the better his chances of survival will be.
Upon arriving at the Wanhuai Coal Mine, Chen Feng was stopped at the security office at the entrance. Without identification or a letter of introduction, ordinary people are not allowed to enter the mine.
“Hey, hey, hey, which unit are you from? You’re barging in without your ID!” A security guard came out. These days, the security department at the mine was basically the police station, except they only handled matters within the mining area. They were arguably the most comfortable part of the police station.
Upon seeing the security personnel, Chen Feng quickly said, “Hello, I’m here to see Wu Wenhua, the head of the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Department. I came here once before with our department head.”
The other party recognized Chen Feng, after all, it had only been a couple of days, and he was on duty that day. But he said with some difficulty, “Brother, this is a government unit. If you don’t have a letter of introduction, I can’t let you in even if I know you!”
Chen Feng didn’t want to make things difficult for the other party. They were all just trying to make a living. If the other party invited him in, who would he turn to for the aftermath?
“Can I make a phone call?” Chen Feng asked.
The security personnel recognized Chen Feng and naturally wouldn’t make things difficult for him. They generously allowed Chen Feng to make as many calls as he wanted, since it was only for calls made inside the mine and wouldn’t cost him any money.
Chen Feng dialed Wu Wenhua’s office number, but no one answered after several attempts. Finally, the security department explained the reason.
“Brother, you’ve come at the wrong time! It’s lunchtime. Section Chief Wu is either eating or still underground. No wonder it’s impossible to make a breakthrough.”
