- Chapter 21 - Made a bold guess.
“Tell me, I can understand why you killed other people, but why did you kill your father?”
Upon hearing Wan Yan’s question, everyone else in the interrogation room was shocked, including Guan Hongwei himself.
How did you know?
He had more than one life on his hands; one more or one less would have been irrelevant to him. But no one ever suspected that his father’s disappearance was related to him.
His father had been missing for twelve years, and was declared dead four years after his disappearance.
His father ran a small business at that time and sometimes had to go to other places to purchase goods. On one occasion, he went to another place to purchase goods and never returned.
I had money with me when I went to buy the goods, and there are bank withdrawal records.
That year, he was eighteen years old.
He called the police a week later.
He was in his final year of high school at the time, about to take the college entrance exam. He usually lived at school and only came back on weekends.
When I got home, I found out that my father hadn’t returned and I couldn’t contact him.
The police investigated for a while but couldn’t find him. Everyone thought he might be gone because he had money on him and might have been targeted by someone.
He would go to the police station from time to time to inquire about the progress. Everyone felt sorry for him. Without his father, he was all alone, and they all thought he was pitiful.
The neighborhood committee ladies would come over from time to time to check on him.
He lived alone in the old house for four years until his father passed away, at which point he moved to a new house.
The new house was bought a long time ago, but unfortunately my father has never lived in it for a single day.
On his first day in the house, he lay on the soft, big bed and whistled excitedly, knowing that no one could threaten him anymore.
“We not only know, but we also know where you hid his remains?” Wan Yan asked casually, but it turned out to be true.
“where?”
“In the courtyard of your old house.”
“How did you guess?” Guan Hongwei was genuinely surprised.
Wan Yanxin thought to himself, “How did he guess? He had no idea it was Su Xiaoxiao who told him.”
“You don’t need to know how we guessed it. Tell me why. I can understand if you went after those who bullied or offended you, but your father treated you well and gave you all his property. What reason do you have to kill him?”
What reason is there to kill him? Because if we don’t kill him, he’ll die on his own.
His father treated him well from childhood. Although they weren’t very close, his father generally fulfilled his requests.
But as he grew up, he discovered something terrible: he looked neither like his mother nor his father, which was bad enough.
But he inadvertently discovered that he resembled another person, the man his mother later married.
He knew that his mother had a fiancé before marrying his father. Later, her fiancé died in an accident, and she married his father. When he was a child, his father often beat and scolded his mother because of this.
He had heard his father question his mother several times about whether she was still thinking about that man.
He actually knew the reason for his parents’ divorce. His mother found out that his father had interfered with his fiancé’s life because the man hadn’t died and had been rescued, returning several years later.
A few years after her divorce, my mother married her former fiancé, but unfortunately, he died a few years later.
He strongly suspected that his father did it, because his father would not allow his mother to marry someone else.
He suspected that he was that man’s son, that his mother was pregnant with him when she married his father, but his father was unaware of it.
He sensed several times that his father looked at him with a murderous intent, and he even heard his father mention that man when he was drunk.
He was terrified. He knew what kind of man his father was; if he knew he wasn’t his son, he would definitely kill him.
So he struck first.
He got his father drunk, strangled him, buried him in the yard, and went to school the next day as if nothing had happened.
As he was leaving, he reminded his father outside the door to be careful when he went out and to close the doors and windows properly. All the neighbors heard this. In fact, he was just telling them so they would think that his father was fine when he left.
This way, the police could testify on his behalf during their investigation. What’s even more ridiculous is that his neighbor, Liu Laiqiang, actually told the police that he saw his father carrying a bag and leaving the house, which was like seeing a ghost. Anyway, no one suspected him.
That was the first time he killed someone.
The interrogation lasted for four hours. Wan Yan got all the details out of him. In addition to killing Wang Jue, Guan Hongwei also killed three other people: his father, his neighbor Liu Laiqiang, and his colleague Qian Guangrong.
He killed Liu Laiqiang because he saw him burying the body, but instead of telling the police, he gave false testimony for them.
It wasn’t out of kindness; I just wanted to use this as leverage to blackmail him, so I had no choice but to kill him as well.
A decade or so ago, criminal investigation techniques and methods were not as advanced as they are now, so it wasn’t too difficult to tamper with a murder.
Qian Guangrong killed him because he was always mocked by him. He had tolerated it many times, but Qian insisted on courting death.
When the two of them went to get their brake pads serviced together, the mechanic told him that the brake pads were too old and needed to be replaced, otherwise there might be an accident someday. But he was extremely stingy and insisted on replacing them next time.
So, he did something slightly tampered with his car, and it really did crash.
With surveillance cameras everywhere, killing someone isn’t as easy as it used to be, so he racked his brains over how to kill Wang Jue.
They thought they could get away with it, but the police found out anyway.
After the interrogation, the criminal investigation team immediately went to the burial site mentioned by Guan Hongwei to dig up the body.
Ye Jiuzhou and the others were filled with admiration for Wan Yan. “Old Wan, how did you know that Guan Hongwei killed his own father and buried the body at home?”
“I don’t know,” Wan Yan said, not daring to take credit. “It was Xiao Xiao who told me.”
Everyone turned their puzzled gazes toward Su Xiaoxiao.
Su Xiaoxiao touched her nose. Actually, she had only thought of it suddenly during Wan Yan’s interrogation, and she was just lucky to have guessed correctly.
She saw portraits of Liu Jie’s parents at Liu Jie’s house that day. At the time, she only thought that Liu Jie looked like his mother. Since Liu Jie was not related to his stepfather by blood, she did not think much of it.
However, during the interrogation, she felt that Guan Hongwei looked familiar, but she had never met Guan Hongwei’s father before.
Searching through my memory, I was surprised to find that Guan Hongwei actually looked like the man his mother later married, which is quite interesting.
Then, she discovered that her father had not died a natural death, but had been declared dead because he was missing, which gave her the idea.
As for the burial site, it’s thought to be in his old family house, because he gave that house to Wang Jue before the marriage.
Most people wouldn’t agree to transfer the house before marriage. What if Wang Jue changes her mind after the transfer and doesn’t want to marry her? That would be a huge problem.
Unless someone is a rich man who doesn’t care about these things, Guan Hongwei is not one of them, and someone like him is unlikely to be love-obsessed.
The fact that he agreed to give the house to Wang Jue so easily shows that he didn’t care about the house, or that he never wanted it in the first place.
So she made a bold guess.
