- Chapter 11 - Only what he doesn't want can be taken by others.
Liu Jie was cleaning the house, holding a woven bag and stuffing unwanted items into it one by one.
Su Xiaoxiao and Xia Xia showed their identification. Liu Jie stared at them for a while, then forced a smile and let them into the house.
Not far from the entrance, there is a table with an incense burner on it, containing burnt incense ash.
Above the table were two black and white photos. One was of a man in his forties or fifties, who should be Liu Jie’s stepfather, Liu Guowei. The other photo was of a woman in her fifties or sixties. The woman had a thin face, downturned lips, and a somewhat bitter look. She should be his mother, Zhao Jiahui.
Liu Jie moved the bags off the floor and let them sit on the sofa.
He pulled up a stool and sat down opposite them.
“You’ve come to me to ask about Guan Hongwei, haven’t you?” He remained calm as he faced the police.
“That’s right, we came here to find out more about Guan Hongwei. Are you brothers close?”
“Oh no, we hardly ever have any contact.”
“Why? Aren’t you brothers? And you don’t live that far apart,” Xia asked.
Liu Jie rolled his eyes, seemingly speechless at the question, but still patiently answered.
“Our parents separated early. He stayed with my father and I stayed with my mother. My father didn’t like us seeing each other, and he didn’t want to see us either. So we stopped seeing each other.”
“He doesn’t get along with your mother?”
“Oh no, he probably thinks my mom shouldn’t have divorced my dad, and I bet my dad has said a lot of bad things about my mom to him.”
When I was little, my mother took me to see him, but he not only refused to see me, but also called her a bad woman. My mother was very sad, but she couldn’t let go of him and would sometimes secretly go to see him. Even on her deathbed, she wanted to see him one last time, but he simply refused to come.
Liu Jie’s expression was one of helplessness.
“Didn’t he come later? He even said he wanted to give money to treat your mother’s illness.” Su Xiaoxiao recalled Guan Hongwei’s description in his statement.
“Bullshit, give me money to treat my mother’s illness? How could that be? He doesn’t care about my mother’s life or death at all.”
Yes, he did come in the end. I dragged him here. My mother wanted to see him before she died, but he refused to come even after I called several times. That day, my mother was clearly on her deathbed. I couldn’t let her die with her eyes open, so I went to find him and practically dragged him over. But it was too late; my mother died with her eyes open.
Liu Jie’s eyes reddened, as if he was recalling that day.
“What kind of person is your brother in your eyes?”
“A cold-blooded and ruthless person.” Liu Jie gritted his teeth.
“Why do you say that? Is it because he doesn’t associate with you?” Su Xiaoxiao asked curiously, because in Guan Hongwei’s confession, he portrayed himself as an honest man who was ridiculed and deceived, and that the murder was just a momentary impulse.
“When my parents divorced, he was already eight years old. My mom let him choose between living with her or living with my dad, and he chose my dad. Do you know why?”
“Why?”
A mocking smile appeared on Liu Jie’s lips.
“Because my dad is better off, he doesn’t want to suffer with my mom, and my mom doesn’t want him to suffer either, so she let him choose for himself. Actually, she wanted to take my brother with her, but she was afraid he would suffer with her.”
I was only five years old at the time and didn’t understand anything. Later I found out that my mother left with almost nothing in order to get a divorce. The house went to them, and my mother and I rented a house to live in.
I still remember how dilapidated that house was. It leaked when it rained, and we were very poor. We couldn’t even eat meat once a week.
Sometimes when my mom had to go out to work, she would lock me in the house. At that time, my only companion was a dog.
I call him a cold-blooded and ruthless person, not because he chose my father who had better conditions, but because he killed my dog.
My mom bought the dog for my brother, but I’m the one who mainly takes care of it. My brother only plays with it when he’s in a good mood. When we left home, the puppy ran over and bit my clothes, looking at me with teary eyes.
I told my mom I wanted to take it with me. It’s just a dog, and my dad doesn’t care. But my brother was unwilling. My mom felt she owed me something, so she took the dog away despite my brother’s objections.
You know, back then I had nothing but that dog, but later that dog was strangled to death.
My mom lied to me and said I was lost, but she actually saw that it was my brother who killed me. I heard them talking.
Because in Guan Hongwei’s mind, I can only take what he doesn’t want, like my mother, but since he didn’t say he didn’t want the dog, I can’t take it.
Su Xiaoxiao noticed that Liu Jie became very emotional when he talked about dogs, and his fingers unconsciously clenched into fists on his pants.
“How do you know your mother wanted to take Guan Hongwei away, and not you?”
“Because she often calls his name in her dreams, and she calls his name when she’s sick, but she’s never called my name in her dreams.” Liu Jie’s face showed a self-deprecating expression.
“Do you hate her? If she had taken Guan Hongwei away back then, perhaps your life would be different.”
From the moment she entered, Su Xiaoxiao noticed that Liu Jie’s house was old and dilapidated, indicating that his family was in poor financial condition. Although his mother had remarried, his stepfather had passed away early and had not left much property for them.
Guan Hongwei was different. Although he was just a taxi driver, he owned two houses. After his father passed away, he left all his property to him and none to his other son.
“What’s there to hate? The person is dead.” Liu Jie shook his head.
As Xia left Liu Jie’s house, he kept frowning. Although Liu Jie’s family was not wealthy, they were harmonious and the brothers had a very good relationship. He couldn’t quite understand Guan Hongwei’s behavior.
Su Xiaoxiao didn’t think much of it. She had encountered all sorts of strange people in the cases she had solved, and Guan Hongwei was nothing compared to that. It was just that the relationship between the two brothers was worse than she had imagined.
Moreover, her left eye twitched while she was chatting with Liu Jie.
Since she transmigrated to this world, her eyes have changed slightly.
If your left eye twitches, you can see things that happened in the past, although it’s just a fleeting image; while if your right eye twitches, you can see things that are about to happen, and they will be bad things.
When she first met Xiang Nan, she saw him turn left after leaving the house and get hit by a falling signboard. It was because of her reminder that Xiang Nan avoided being hit.
Unexpectedly, on their second meeting, she saw his car lose control and crash into a large truck. She thought to herself, “How unlucky is this guy?” and, feeling sorry for him, took him to her family’s small stall for a meal, thus avoiding a second accident.
They haven’t seen each other in a long time, and they wonder how that poor kid is doing now!
However, I heard that he’s doing very well now, so she probably doesn’t need to worry about him anymore. Besides, that guy is clearly pretending to be weak while actually being strong. She underestimated him before, and thinking about it still makes her angry. She’ll definitely punch him a few times next time she sees him.
The ability to see was a system-provided ability, but she couldn’t control when she could see; she could only see when the system wanted her to.
She came to find Liu Jie only to verify the truth of Guan Hongwei’s confession. In his confession, he was an honest man who had been deceived, and that he had been drugged when he committed the murder. His original intention was not to kill, but just to scare them.
If these facts hold true, his crime is not punishable by death, and with a proper defense, he may face a very minor charge.
She thought Liu Jie was just an insignificant person, but when she saw him, her left eye twitched.
