- Chapter 26 - Jiang Youxi, Feed Me
Xie Zhao looked at the two downstairs in disbelief: “No… Brother Zhuo, this birthday surprise was arranged by Jiang Youxi and her brother Jiang Xu together?!”
As their blessing faded, everyone in the mall joined in shouting, “Happy birthday, He Zhuo!”
The noise of the crowd was deafening.
Everyone cooperated fully, rushing over and crowding around He Zhuo, half-pushing and half-reluctantly pushing him downstairs.
He Zhuo went down to the first floor, and the cake they had ordered was just being pushed over.
The cake was huge, with five layers, and it looked to be over a meter tall.
The cake was also very elaborate, with a dark color that He Zhuo liked, and it was decorated with racing elements that He Zhuo loved.
The two pushed the cake in front of him.
Jiang Xu excitedly pulled He Zhuo over: “Brother He Zhuo, it’s almost midnight! We need to make a wish and blow out the candles before midnight. Hurry up and make your wish!”
He Zhuo looked around, then glanced at the dark-themed, high-end cake: “Did you guys make all of this?”
“Oh, right.” Jiang Youxi smiled obsequiously. “Senior He Zhuo, it’s just a small token of my sincerity, nothing to mention.”
“What made you decide to celebrate my birthday?”
“Because Jiang Xu said you were very sad.”
He Zhuo frowned, glancing at the boy beside him with some surprise.
Jiang Xu grinned foolishly: “Dad… ptooey, Brother He Zhuo, I heard from Uncle Xie Zhao that you haven’t cut the cake yet tonight. I guess they don’t know your preferences. Look!”
She pointed to the large cake behind her: “A dark-themed cake, your favorite! It’s huge, there’ll definitely be enough for everyone!”
He Zhuo stared blankly at the tall cake.
He was surprised that the siblings, whom he had only met a few times, knew his preferences and had even prepared a birthday surprise for him.
This is the first big birthday cake he has received since returning to the He family.
I thought that over the years he had come to terms with it and accepted the fact that there was no cake on his birthday.
But now, when you see someone you would never expect meticulously decorate the venue for your little birthday, dressed in a heavy mascot costume, just to give you a birthday surprise.
He only found out then.
It turns out he wasn’t indifferent; he had just gotten used to it and become numb to it.
He had become accustomed to their neglect and injustice towards him.
They also became numb to their indifference.
He was unwilling to accept his fate and deceived himself.
But what remains unchanged is the fact that he has always been a single person.
The first thing an adult does to “grow up” is—
Admit that your parents don’t love you.
Seeing that he didn’t react, Jiang Youxi hesitated: “Does he like this surprise and this cake or not?”
Jiang Xu scratched his head: “Could I be remembering wrong? But I remember Dad telling me that he really liked this cake when he was in college.”
Jiang Youxi tentatively asked, “Senior He Zhuo, do you… not like this cake?”
“like.”
Jiang Youxi was taken aback. She clearly hadn’t expected him to answer so readily, without the slightest hesitation.
She breathed a sigh of relief, her joy visibly palpable: “Okay! Then quickly make a wish!”
He Zhuo glanced at the cake: “Aren’t you going to light the candles?”
Jiang Youxi then noticed that the candles had not been lit.
She turned to look for a lighter, but He Zhuo took two steps forward, pulled out a lighter, and lit the candles one by one.
Jiang Youxi stood frozen in place.
The man stood behind her, his raised arm level with her head, his sleeve constantly brushing against her temples.
His movements resembled a gentle embrace, and his distinctive, crisp cedar scent, mixed with the sweet aroma of the cake, continuously filled her nostrils.
Jiang Youxi’s heart raced inexplicably, and she felt a strange tingling sensation on half of her face from the slight itch.
The candles were lit, and the lights in the mall went out again.
Everyone fell silent; you could hear a pin drop.
He Zhuo put away the lighter, closed his eyes, and clasped his hands together.
Jiang Youxi’s gaze involuntarily fell on him.
The candlelight flickered on his face, dimming and making it difficult to see clearly.
But the man’s perpetually gloomy brows relaxed for once, revealing a hint of joy.
Is he happy?
Realizing this, Jiang Youxi leaned close to Jiang Xu’s ear and whispered, “Your dad is happy.”
Jiang Xu whispered back, “Dad must be very touched right now!”
Yeah?
Jiang Youxi carefully examined the man’s face again, and as she looked, He Zhuo suddenly opened his eyes.
Their eyes met unexpectedly.
His gaze was dark and deep, like a deep pool, as if he wanted to suck her in completely.
Jiang Youxi was startled, then quickly looked away and coughed twice to ease the awkwardness.
Jiang Xu then urged He Zhuo to blow out the candles and cut the cake.
He Zhuo was unusually obedient tonight; he did whatever they said.
After the candles were blown out, the mall lights came on again.
While He Zhuo was cutting the cake, Jiang Youxi and Jiang Xu quickly went backstage to change out of their mascot costumes.
He Zhuo used a knife to cut off the best part in the middle and called Xie Zhao over: “Distribute the rest to everyone here.”
After saying that, he carried the big cake to the backstage area.
They had just changed their clothes and came out when they saw He Zhuo sitting there with a large cake on the table.
Jiang Xu’s eyes lit up, and he quickly walked over: “Dad, did you cut this cake for us?”
Perhaps because he was in a good mood, He Zhuo was too lazy to correct Jiang Xu’s way of addressing him, and took the initiative to cut the cake in half and give it to them: “You eat this one.”
Jiang Xu looked at the cake: “Why is mine so small?”
“You can’t eat that much.”
“I can eat it!”
He Zhuo looked at him and said, “You can’t eat that much.”
“…”
Upon meeting He Zhuo’s warning gaze, Jiang Xu immediately backed down: “Okay, I can’t eat it.”
After saying that, he picked up his spoon and obediently ate the smaller piece.
Jiang Youxi walked over and sat down, and the largest piece of cake was pushed in front of her.
Jiang Youxi asked in surprise, “For me?”
“Or should we give it to the table?”
“…”
Jiang Youxi was inexplicably happy and gave him a sweet smile: “Thank you, Senior He Zhuo~”
After saying that, he picked up a spoon and started eating.
He Zhuo watched them eat quietly.
As Jiang Youxi ate, she noticed that he had been watching her, and that’s when she realized what was going on.
“You… haven’t eaten yet?”
“not yet.”
“…”
No wonder he looked at her like a wolf, as if he wanted to devour her.
“Then I’ll share some with you, since I can’t eat that much anyway.”
Jiang Youxi searched around but couldn’t find the spoon.
“You only took two spoons?”
“yes.”
“…”
Jiang Xu used one, and she had the other one too.
“Then what should we do?”
He looked at her and said, “I don’t know either.”
“How about… I take it to wash?”
With cake in his mouth, Jiang Xu mumbled a reminder: “Mom, you can just feed it to Dad.”
“Are you crazy?”
“It’s not like we haven’t fed them before.”
“What?”
In the future, she will often feed He Zhuo?!
“Mom, why are you making such a fuss? You two are husband and wife… umm—”
Jiang Youxi forcibly muted Jiang Xu’s microphone and smiled at He Zhuo: “This kid is having another episode, please forgive him.”
“I think he’s right.”
“ah?”
“Today I’m the birthday person, so am I the most important person?”
Jiang Youxi hesitated, “So?”
“So…” He Zhuo reached out and took her hand, scooped up a spoonful of cake, and gestured—
“I want you to feed me.”
