- Chapter 66 - Lure the Snake Out of Its Hole (Part 2)
Night.
Shangjing First Signal Tower.
As one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, the 600-meter-tall structure—combining a transmission tower with a massive antenna mast—stood as the highest artificial point in Shangjing.
Even ordinary people felt breathless simply looking up at it.
Only maintenance workers accustomed to heights and thrill-seeking climbers would ever dare reach the top.
Yet at the very peak, where even birds rarely flew, a lone figure sat quietly.
The aviation warning lights blinked on and off, causing her silhouette to appear and disappear against the night sky.
The wind howled around her, but the figure remained completely still.
Only the pale linen cloak whipping violently in the gale revealed the passage of time.
“Tonight, let’s eat something different?”
“What’s different?”
Baiyan pulled her hood lower, concealing her face and body beneath the cloak like a desert pilgrim.
“At our current strength, hunting ordinary humans barely helps us recover.”
She paused.
“We need something richer.”
“Other aberrations…”
Her voice darkened.
“…or magical girls.”
“Go after a magical girl?”
Mengyan sounded amused.
“You’ve got some nerve.”
Baiyan let out a cold, mocking laugh.
“Have you forgotten how you ended up like this?”
“Hey, don’t be so harsh.”
Mengyan quickly defended herself.
“Those were four magical girls who were already approaching the Four Pillars level.”
“I actually took down three of them.”
She paused.
“I just got careless at the end.”
“That white-haired one was strange, though.”
“She completely resisted my Nightmare Bind. Honestly, I still don’t understand how she did it.”
Mengyan’s tone became more confident.
“At our current strength, revenge is impossible.”
“But hunting one or two rookies?”
“More than doable.”
She laughed.
“Interested, little girl?”
Baiyan didn’t answer.
She simply stared at the distant cityscape.
From this height, the sprawling metropolis filled with millions of people looked almost insignificant.
It felt as though she could crush the entire city in the palm of her hand.
“Where would we find a rookie magical girl?”
she finally asked.
“The three we fought last time, for example.”
Mengyan thought for a moment.
“But don’t touch the blue one.”
“Stay away from her at all costs.”
“The others…”
She chuckled.
“How about the red one?”
“She seems close to you.”
“Maybe she’ll surrender without a fight…”
“Hehe.”
“…You say that.”
Baiyan lowered her gaze toward her right hand.
The same hand that was holding Mengyan’s eye.
She slowly clenched her fist.
Blood began to seep between her fingers.
“Ow, ow, ow!”
Mengyan’s voice squeaked in pain.
“I’m sorry!”
Baiyan slowly loosened her grip.
“The first time, I thought you were joking.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“But only the first time.”
She stared at the blood on her hand.
Her voice was as cold as a wind blowing from the underworld.
“Phew…”
Mengyan sounded genuinely frightened.
“That was scary. I almost got crushed to death.”
“Then…”
Baiyan paused.
“What about the yellow one?”
“The yellow one?”
Mengyan immediately responded.
“Yes.”
“Go for her.”
Baiyan nodded.
“For some reason…”
Her hollow eyes flickered.
“I just don’t like her.”
She remembered the battle from that night.
The yellow magical girl had carried You Xi away.
Smoothly.
Elegantly.
Almost like a celebrity.
You Xi wasn’t hers.
Baiyan knew that.
Yet the sensation of having something precious taken away from her had burned itself deeply into her heart.
“Let’s hunt her.”
Baiyan bit her finger, her hollow eyes flickering with dark excitement.
“Magical girls often work in teams,” Mengyan explained.
“But they don’t always stay together after their missions.”
“With enough patience, we’ll eventually find the right opportunity.”
Then her tone became serious.
“And one more thing.”
“Stop all activity for now.”
“Until we find an opportunity to hunt the yellow one, every unnecessary move increases our chances of being exposed.”
“Their tracking system hasn’t been updated.”
“Right now, we’re hiding in the shadows.”
“Don’t throw away that advantage.”
“Understood.”
“Alright.”
“That’s it for tonight.”
After another routine patrol, Tidal and Huangxing said their goodbyes.
Normally, Huangxing would return to Mo Li’s place and then take a cab home.
But tonight, she seemed unusually energetic.
She continued flying as Huangxing, soaring across the city until she eventually reached a quiet wetland park.
Come to think of it…
This was the same park where the three of them had first met.
Curious, she looked around.
Sure enough, she found the holes dug by the Mole Men.
Following her memories, she even located the tree she had pinned with her arrow that night.
Is this some kind of nostalgic trip?
A strange feeling stirred inside Huangxing’s chest.
The past two weeks had felt incredibly long.
So much had happened.
So many unexpected things.
She stood quietly, lost in thought.
Then—
A rustling sound came from the woods behind her.
Wildlife?
Huangxing instinctively turned around.
Under the dim light, she saw a figure wearing a pale linen cloak.
Its face was hidden.
Slowly, the figure approached.
Huangxing immediately recognized the threat.
She raised her hand, preparing to summon her weapon.
“Don’t move.”
The cloaked figure raised its right hand.
Dark-purple magic gathered around it.
“You know it’s too late, right?”
The figure spoke.
It was Baiyan.
“Yeah.”
Huangxing sighed.
“It is.”
Even if she had reacted faster, it was already too late.
The enemy had caught her off guard.
But strangely, Baiyan didn’t attack immediately.
Perhaps…
She wanted to hear what Huangxing had to say.
“You’re Mengyan, right?”
Huangxing asked.
Baiyan didn’t deny it.
Instead, she asked:
“Where’s the red one?”
“The one who was with you?”
In truth, that was the only reason Baiyan hadn’t attacked immediately.
Otherwise, the battle would have ended before Huangxing had even turned around.
“You care about her?”
Huangxing suddenly smiled.
“Yeah.”
“She’s my best friend, after all.”
She gave a small laugh.
“A magical girl and an aberration being best friends.”
“Not exactly the kind of relationship you hear about every day.”
“Not that I blame you…”
“But that’s some pretty dark humor, don’t you think?”
Baiyan remained silent.
But the dark-purple light in her hand suddenly intensified, expressing the anger she refused to put into words.
Huangxing ignored the hostile energy.
Instead, she sighed.
“Not that I blame you…”
“But is this really how you repay someone who trusted you?”
“You had someone as kind and honest as You Xi by your side.”
“How did you end up falling this far?”
She looked at Baiyan with genuine pity.
Baiyan trembled.
The words had clearly struck something deep inside her.
“Angry?”
Huangxing smiled.
“Good.”
“If you can still feel anger when you hear my words…”
“Then you’re not beyond saving.”
Her expression relaxed.
“Save your breath.”
Baiyan suppressed the storm of emotions Huangxing had stirred inside her.
“You’ve already lost.”
She raised her hand and aimed directly at Huangxing.
“I’ll make you dream a nightmare…”
“One you’ll never wake up from.”
“Is that so?”
Huangxing narrowed her eyes.
“But before that…”
She paused.
“Can I ask you one question?”
A sly, almost cunning smile appeared on her face.
It was a smile that seemed completely out of place on a girl her age.
“…Do I really look that much like Magical Girl Huangxing?”
