That single embrace told Xu Nian far more than she wanted to know.

Maybe the simulator wasn’t lying after all.

Maybe Su Qingya really had changed.

Her actions were noticeably more assertive than before.

More possessive.

More intense.

Almost as if she were afraid that the person in her arms might disappear at any moment.

But…

Why?

Xu Nian couldn’t understand it.

A breakup that lasted less than a minute shouldn’t be enough to completely change someone’s personality.

People didn’t transform overnight.

At least, not without a reason.

The Su Qingya she knew had always been gentle.

Quiet.

Obedient.

The kind of girl who would blush from a few teasing words.

Nothing about her had ever resembled the terrifying person described by the simulator.

If she truly possessed such extreme tendencies, wouldn’t Xu Nian have noticed long ago?

After all, they had known each other for years.

Even if someone had an obsessive personality, it didn’t simply appear out of nowhere.

There had to be a process.

Loneliness.

Emotional neglect.

A difficult upbringing.

Countless stories followed the same pattern.

People who grew up in darkness often became desperate to hold onto the first warmth they encountered.

They longed to be loved.

And once they finally found that love…

They wanted it all for themselves.

Xu Nian understood that much.

But that explanation still didn’t fit.

Not completely.

Something was missing.

Some piece of information she didn’t know.

A change.

An event.

Something must have happened to Su Qingya after the simulator’s timeline began.

Otherwise, none of this made sense.

Lost in thought, Xu Nian failed to notice Su Qingya lowering her head slightly.

“Niannian.”

The sudden voice snapped her back to reality.

Xu Nian nearly jumped.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Had she been discovered?

Had Su Qingya somehow seen through her thoughts?

Or was her acting simply that bad?

“Are you afraid of me?”

The question sounded calm.

Yet it made Xu Nian’s entire body tense.

“N-No?”

She forced out a laugh.

“Why would I be afraid of you, little fish?”

“You’re my girlfriend.”

Her fox ears twitched nervously.

Trying to divert the conversation, Xu Nian poked Su Qingya’s shoulder.

“Actually…”

“Have you been secretly working out lately?”

She looked up suspiciously.

“Seriously, where did all this strength come from?”

The hug was still painfully tight.

Xu Nian felt as though her ribs were being squeezed together.

She pouted dramatically.

“Don’t tell me you’ve finally gotten tired of me and decided to start bullying me physically.”

“No way.”

“No way, right?”

“You wouldn’t become the kind of terrible girlfriend who abuses her partner, would you?”

As she spoke, Xu Nian attempted to wriggle free.

Or at least create enough space to breathe properly.

After all, being hugged this tightly was genuinely uncomfortable.

Even if the person hugging her happened to smell incredibly nice.

Xu Nian spoke in a teasing tone, hoping to subtly persuade Su Qingya to loosen her grip.

“How could I ever be afraid of you? You’re my cute little fish.”

Su Qingya shook her head immediately.

“How could I have thoughts like that? I was just excited to see you.”

Her voice softened.

“How could I ever hurt you, Niannian?”

That’s not what the simulator said…

Xu Nian complained internally.

Still, Su Qingya’s hold relaxed noticeably.

At least she could breathe properly again.

“Puff puff~ You’re really the type who can’t live without people.”

“That’s right.”

Su Qingya admitted it without hesitation.

“I can’t live without you.”

Her answer came so naturally that Xu Nian nearly choked.

“Then why would you suddenly do something like that?”

“What?”

“The breakup test.”

Xu Nian coughed awkwardly.

“Well…”

She quickly made up an excuse.

“I saw someone online saying that if you want to know whether someone truly loves you, you should mention breaking up.”

“And then?”

“And then if they really care, they’ll try everything they can to keep you.”

Xu Nian folded her arms dramatically.

“But honestly, you disappointed me.”

Su Qingya blinked.

“I disappointed you?”

“Of course.”

Xu Nian nodded seriously.

“You weren’t trying to keep me.”

“You were just angry.”

For a brief moment, Su Qingya fell silent.

Then she spoke with complete sincerity.

“If that’s the case…”

“I can apologize.”

Xu Nian suddenly had a bad feeling.

The next sentence confirmed it.

“Would cutting out my tongue be enough?”

“…What?”

Xu Nian nearly jumped in fright.

“Sister, that’s way too extreme!”

She hurriedly grabbed Su Qingya’s wrist before the girl could move toward the kitchen.

“No one is cutting anything!”

“Absolutely not!”

Only after several seconds of persuasion did Su Qingya reluctantly give up.

Xu Nian’s expression became increasingly complicated.

This was definitely not normal.

In the past, Su Qingya would have simply told her not to watch strange relationship videos online.

Now she was talking about mutilating herself to apologize.

Something had clearly changed.

Something significant.

“Niannian.”

Su Qingya smiled gently.

“You were only joking.”

“I’ve already forgiven you.”

“As long as you came to see me, that’s enough.”

Right.

And according to the simulator, this is where things start going wrong.

Xu Nian silently complained.

No matter how gentle Su Qingya appeared, the simulation’s warnings continued echoing in her mind.

She couldn’t let her guard down.

Not yet.

“Oh, right.”

Su Qingya suddenly looked down.

“Didn’t you say you hurt your leg?”

“It’s fine.”

Xu Nian waved her hand dismissively.

“I just bumped into something.”

Without another word, Su Qingya crouched down.

Then she carefully rolled down part of Xu Nian’s white stocking.

A faint bruise immediately came into view.

Su Qingya frowned.

“You really hurt yourself.”

“It’s nothing.”

“You always say that.”

The concern in her voice was unmistakable.

“Doesn’t it hurt?”

“Not at all.”

Xu Nian answered confidently.

A second later, Su Qingya gently pressed the bruise.

“Hiss—!”

Xu Nian immediately sucked in a breath.

Her fox ears shot upright.

Even her tail stiffened.

Instinctively, she tried to pull her leg away.

Seeing the reaction, Su Qingya raised an eyebrow.

“Doesn’t hurt?”

“…A little.”

Xu Nian looked away awkwardly.

A faint smile appeared on Su Qingya’s lips.

Instead of teasing her further, she placed her hand over the bruise.

A soft warmth spread across Xu Nian’s skin.

The pain faded almost instantly.

The discoloration gradually disappeared before her eyes.

Within moments, the bruise was gone.

Xu Nian wasn’t particularly surprised.

After everything she had seen in the simulations, special abilities no longer seemed impossible.

Still, she widened her eyes and pretended to be shocked.

“Wow.”

“That’s amazing.”

“How did you do that?”

Su Qingya hesitated briefly.

Then she shook her head.

“A lot has happened recently.”

Her expression became slightly complicated.

“I can’t explain everything right now.”

She looked directly into Xu Nian’s eyes.

“You only need to know one thing.”

“What?”

A faint smile appeared on Su Qingya’s face.

“I finally have the power to protect you.”

Su Qingya seemed reluctant to explain further.

Not wanting to push the issue, Xu Nian flexed her thin arms with exaggerated confidence.

“Hmph.”

“I don’t need your protection.”

She puffed out her chest proudly.

“I’m very strong, you know.”

“Yes, yes.”

A gentle smile appeared on Su Qingya’s face.

“My Niannian is the strongest.”

Then, as if remembering something, she suddenly asked:

“By the way, do you still want that table in your room?”

Xu Nian blinked.

“The table?”

“What do you want with my table?”

Su Qingya tilted her head thoughtfully.

“I heard food cooked over a wood fire tastes better.”

“I’m running short on firewood.”

“…”

Xu Nian stared at her.

Completely speechless.

That table was handcrafted from premium hardwood.

It cost a small fortune.

And this woman wanted to chop it up for cooking?

What kind of wasteful thought process was that?

Xu Nian decided it was best not to continue that conversation.

She had absolutely no interest in discovering whether rice cooked with a table worth hundreds of thousands tasted different.

Instead, she quickly changed the subject.

“Speaking of food…”

A sly smile appeared on her face.

“I brought you a gift.”

“A gift?”

Su Qingya’s eyes immediately brightened.

“No matter what it is, I’ll like it as long as it’s from you.”

“Haha.”

Xu Nian laughed awkwardly.

“It’s just something I cooked.”

She pointed toward the food container she had brought with her.

“But you have to eat every dish.”

“Every single one.”

Then she quickly added:

“And don’t misunderstand.”

“I didn’t make it specifically for you.”

“You can only be considered my test subject.”

“I’m using you to check whether the seasoning is right.”

Su Qingya narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

The look immediately made Xu Nian nervous.

“What?”

Xu Nian crossed her arms.

“Even if my cooking isn’t perfect, you don’t need to look at me like that.”

After a brief pause, she sighed dramatically.

“Fine.”

“I admit it.”

“It was prepared for you.”

“There.”

“Happy?”

“If you don’t eat it, even I’ll be sad.”

Only then did Su Qingya’s expression soften.

“I see.”

She glanced toward the food container.

“I was only wondering why you brought so much.”

After all, she had already prepared a full dinner herself.

Xu Nian didn’t pay much attention to that.

Instead, she hurriedly opened the container.

One plate after another appeared.

Before Su Qingya could ask more questions, Xu Nian quickly filled the small dining table.

Steamed chicken.

Braised pork.

Tofu with minced meat.

Fresh vegetables.

Steamed sea bass.

The dishes looked surprisingly appetizing.

Even Xu Nian herself felt hungry after arranging them.

Behind her, however, Su Qingya suddenly fell silent.

A strange expression appeared on her face.

Then she spoke.

“…Niannian.”

“Hm?”

Xu Nian froze.

“Why are all the dishes you brought…”

Su Qingya looked at the table.

Then at the dishes she had already prepared.

Then back at Xu Nian.

“…exactly the same as the ones I made?”

“…”

The smile on Xu Nian’s face immediately stiffened.

For a brief moment, the entire room became silent.

Even the ticking clock seemed awkward.
