The four of them ended up discussing the matter so enthusiastically that they eventually found themselves standing on the same side.

In the end, all eyes landed on Xu Qingshan.

Caught off guard, Xu Qingshan froze.

In a family of four, the minority follows the majority—and at home, the husband follows the wife.

Having reached this point, he no longer had any room to object.

“…Forget it. It’s your lives. Do as you wish.”

With a helpless sigh, he accepted reality.

“Yay!”

After all the twists and turns, they had finally received their parents’ approval.

The next task was showing Su Qingya around the mansion.

Xu Qingshan entrusted the responsibility entirely to Xu Nian.

Since Su Qingya was Xu Nian’s girlfriend, he felt there was no one more suitable for the job.

And so, Xu Nian happily guided her through every corner of the estate.

“This is the front courtyard. That’s the main hall. Here’s my room, and that one’s yours. Mom and Dad’s room is over there. This is the dining room, the hallway, the restroom, the study, the treasure room, the back garden, and finally the rear wing.”

Her explanations were simple and direct, little more than pointing from place to place.

To Xu Nian, this mansion was too familiar to describe with any sense of wonder.

After all, there would be plenty of time to explore it together in the future.

Living here day after day would naturally make everything familiar.

As for everything else…

The house had enough maids to handle all the cleaning.

Even if the two of them wanted to help, there really wasn’t anything left for them to do.

Unless…

They secretly slipped away into an empty room.

“Niannian.”

“Eek!”

“What’s wrong? Your face is awfully red.”

“N-Nothing.”

Of course, Xu Nian wasn’t about to admit that she had just been thinking of something rather embarrassing.

“Niannian… honestly, everything still feels unreal to me.”

As she spoke, Su Qingya stopped on an open-air balcony.

The two sat side by side, quietly admiring the scenery beyond.

The evening sky was painted in warm golden hues.

Clouds blazed like fire where heaven met earth, while the fading sunlight wrapped the pair in a soft crimson glow.

The breeze was cool and gentle.

It played with Su Qingya’s hair as she stretched lazily, letting her thoughts settle.

The melancholy in her expression gradually surfaced.

“What’s wrong?”

Sensing the subtle sadness in her mood, Xu Nian instinctively became a quiet listener.

Her fluffy fox tail curled gently around Su Qingya, while her ears drooped slightly as she focused entirely on the girl beside her.

“Niannian… I’m eighteen now.”

“I spent twelve years living with my parents, then six years on my own. And only recently was I suddenly told that I still had biological parents.”

“Even now… it all feels strangely unreal.”

This was a side of herself Su Qingya only ever revealed to Xu Nian.

Only in front of her could she expose the worries buried deep inside.

Because she trusted her.

And Xu Nian was more than willing to listen.

“You know… before all this, I was full of fear toward this so-called biological family.”

“But at the same time, hidden beneath that fear was hope.”

“It’s embarrassing to admit, but I’ve always longed for the love of my parents.”

“When I first learned the truth, I kept imagining they would cherish me the way my adoptive parents once did when I was little.”

“But I was also afraid…”

“Afraid they’d only take me back because of blood ties.”

“Afraid they’d see me as an outsider.”

“Afraid they’d simply leave me alone after fulfilling their obligation.”

“Afraid that the person who had lived my life all these years would resent me and treat me as someone trying to steal everything away.”

A faint self-mocking smile crossed her face.

Now that everything had turned out differently, speaking those fears aloud almost felt liberating.

“Niannian… I’ve realized that I’m always afraid.”

“Afraid of this. Afraid of that.”

“I used to think I was weak and pathetic.”

“But then I met you.”

“And I truly believe meeting you was the greatest blessing of my life.”

As the topic shifted, Xu Nian’s cheeks gradually reddened.

“W-Why are you saying all this all of a sudden?”

“Because I’m grateful.”

“You’re the light that appeared in my life.”

“If it weren’t for you, I don’t think I would’ve had the courage to make it this far.”

“And when I finally discovered the truth…”

“…when I realized it was you…”

“Even though I felt embarrassed after being teased by you, I also felt relieved.”

“Because it meant I didn’t have to worry about complicated relationships anymore.”

“I didn’t have to think about conflicts with strangers.”

“All I had to do was keep loving you, just as I always had.”

“And somehow, everything became simple again.”

“Thank you, Niannian.”

“Thank you… for accepting me.”

Listening to those heartfelt words, Xu Nian’s face grew even redder.

“T-That’s way too much praise…”

“I-I’m not nearly that amazing.”

For once, she didn’t boast or tease in return.

She simply scratched her head shyly while her fox tail swayed behind her.

“Qingya, don’t say those things about yourself.”

“In my eyes, you’re incredible.”

“You only lack confidence.”

“You’re much stronger than you think.”

“Even today… you were braver than I was.”

Her praise came without hesitation.

Yet hidden deep within her beautiful fox eyes was a fleeting darkness that passed unnoticed.

“If that’s the case…”

“Then rely on me even more.”

“You can depend on me as much as you want.”

“If there are things you don’t want to face…”

“…leave them to me.”

“Because no matter what happens…”

“…I’ll always accept you.”

“Mm… thank you, Niannian.”

The two gazed quietly into each other’s eyes.

Bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, they unconsciously leaned closer.

Until they could feel each other’s breath.

Their lips met gently.

In the crimson evening light, they embraced one another, sharing a quiet sweetness only the two of them understood.

Just then, Su Qingya noticed footsteps approaching.

Reluctantly, she let Xu Nian go.

Fortunately, a decorative screen concealed them from view.

A maid soon emerged from behind it.

“Ladies, the Madam asked me to inform you that the banquet this evening will begin soon. Please make your preparations.”

“A banquet?”

Su Qingya repeated in confusion.

“Yes.”

“It is a welcome banquet celebrating Miss Qingya’s return to the family.”

“Many distinguished guests have already been invited.”

“It is a formal occasion.”

“The Master arranged it in advance so that he could officially introduce the young lady to the city’s social circle.”
