- Chapter 36 - The Lovebeast’s Pink Mist
“Could the two of you spare a moment? I’d like a private word.”
Just as Xu Nian casually muttered her complaint, an odd creature drifted into view.
Calling it a giant-headed fly didn’t feel quite right.
Its oversized head was attached to a plump pink body, with a pair of pristine white feathered wings fluttering behind it.
Strange as it was…
It somehow looked rather adorable.
Every Fluxbeast seemed capable of interfering with perception.
As long as ordinary people remained unaware of their existence, they would rarely notice them.
The moment Su Qingya saw the creature appear before them, she acted without hesitation.
Dark energy quietly condensed in her palm.
She was already preparing to smash it straight into the beast’s forehead.
“Little girl, don’t push your luck.”
“I’ve already shown plenty of goodwill.”
“I even came out personally to negotiate.”
“Can’t you stop and have a proper conversation?”
Seeing that Su Qingya intended to attack without another word, the Lovebeast immediately flapped its wings and rose higher into the air.
Its eyes never left Su Qingya for a moment.
It clearly feared that she would suddenly launch something dangerous.
“Besides…”
“You can see I’m flying.”
“You’re only a one-star Fluxweaver.”
“You don’t possess any long-range attacks.”
“So there’s nothing you can do to me.”
That much was true.
A one-star Fluxweaver had very limited ranged capabilities.
But…
Xu Nian specialized in things outside the rules.
Within her vision, the invisible cloth bag carrying the Holy Sword, disguises, a small knife, and various other items quietly floated behind the unsuspecting Lovebeast.
Then—
It swung downward.
Bang!
An unseen weapon was naturally difficult to guard against.
Even the Lovebeast had no idea where Xu Nian’s invisible bag was.
It only felt something heavy smash into the back of its head.
The next instant, it tumbled straight out of the sky.
Su Qingya blinked in surprise.
Only briefly.
Then she calmly walked toward it as though nothing unusual had happened.
A black spear of fear condensed once more in her hand.
It was the technique she used most often.
Simple.
Reliable.
Easy to cast.
The pink-uniformed employee nearby watched the scene with visible terror.
Even as impatient tourists urged her to continue loading passengers onto the Ferris wheel, she couldn’t look away.
“Mercy!”
“Please spare me!”
“Beautiful heroine!”
“Kind goddess!”
“Peerless fairy!”
“Magnificent empress!”
“…Most graceful lady in existence!”
“I was wrong!”
“I truly was!”
“Please don’t kill me!”
“I haven’t harmed a single person!”
“I’m completely different from those vicious monsters!”
“You don’t need to waste your precious time on someone like me!”
The Lovebeast immediately dropped to its knees and begged.
Apparently, once its greatest advantage had been shattered by Xu Nian’s sneak attack, its confidence collapsed along with it.
Or perhaps…
The natural suppression exerted by Su Qingya’s pathway frightened it instinctively.
Not to mention the overwhelming aura she had displayed while nearly losing control earlier.
Xu Nian frowned.
“Who gave you permission to compliment my Qingya?”
“She’s mine.”
“Only I get to praise her.”
The Lovebeast froze.
“…What?”
Then its expression twisted.
“Damn it!”
It pointed directly at Xu Nian.
Originally, it had come hoping to negotiate peaceful coexistence.
After all, abandoning such a rich source of emotional energy would be a shame.
Instead…
It encountered two utterly unreasonable Fluxweavers.
One escalated to violence at the slightest disagreement.
The other got jealous because someone complimented her girlfriend.
They were insane.
There was clearly nothing left to discuss.
“I haven’t survived this long for nothing.”
“This place isn’t worth staying in anymore.”
“I won’t bother fighting you here.”
The moment it finished speaking, thick pink mist exploded outward.
Within seconds…
The Lovebeast vanished without a trace.
Unfortunately…
Xu Nian and Su Qingya both inhaled the cloud before they could react.
“What a strange creature.”
Xu Nian instinctively complained.
Then her expression changed.
“…Wait.”
“This mist is poisonous.”
Su Qingya’s voice rang out at almost the same moment.
“What?!”
Gradually…
Xu Nian noticed something was wrong too.
Her vision seemed to have acquired an odd filter.
Countless tiny pink hearts decorated the edges of her sight, exactly like visual effects from an anime.
When she looked at Su Qingya…
Her eyes overflowed with affection.
The feeling was mutual.
“Nian Nian…”
“You’re so beautiful today.”
“No…”
“You’re always beautiful.”
“But today you’re especially dazzling.”
Xu Nian smiled dreamily.
“I think exactly the same.”
“Yaya…”
“Everything about you is irresistible.”
The two unconsciously drifted closer.
Eyes locked.
Nothing else seemed to exist.
All around them, similar scenes unfolded.
Tourists began confessing to one another at random.
The entire square descended into romantic chaos.
“Nian Nian.”
“I love you.”
“So much I can hardly breathe.”
“Every part of you draws me in.”
Xu Nian answered without hesitation.
“I feel exactly the same.”
Oddly enough…
Neither of them actually crossed the line.
They merely stared into each other’s eyes and exchanged increasingly embarrassing declarations.
Maintaining only the faintest distance.
Because desire itself did not belong to love.
Whether lust born from affection…
Or lust born from instinct…
That belonged to another pathway entirely.
Before either could continue—
A deep bell echoed through the square.
Dong.
Xu Nian and Su Qingya instantly regained their senses.
The chaotic emotions flooding their hearts vanished completely.
As though wiped clean.
The effects of the pink mist disappeared in an instant.
Around them, tourists looked equally bewildered.
Everyone remembered blurting out ridiculous confessions.
The disconnect was impossible to ignore.
People immediately began discussing what had happened.
Trying to compare memories.
Then—
The bell rang again.
Dong.
Its resonance swept across the plaza.
Silence followed.
Every person froze where they stood.
Expressionless.
Eyes vacant.
For one or two seconds…
No one moved.
Then life resumed.
Conversations continued naturally.
As if nothing strange had ever happened.
No one remembered what had just occurred.
Xu Nian’s expression slowly darkened.
She glanced toward her own emotional values.
Both she and Su Qingya had been forcibly reduced to around ten percent.
At that level…
Their pathway abilities were almost completely sealed.
Xu Nian desperately recalled every happy memory she could think of.
She tried to raise her Joy Value.
Nothing happened.
Her heart remained eerily calm.
No excitement.
No amusement.
No emotional ripples whatsoever.
She turned toward Su Qingya.
The same blank stillness lingered over her.
Then—
A trace of fear appeared on Su Qingya’s face.
She tried imagining the possibility of losing Xu Nian.
Normally…
That single thought alone would send her Fear Value soaring.
But now…
Nothing happened.
Not even the slightest fluctuation.
A terrible realization dawned upon her.
Had she become indifferent?
Had she truly reached the point where even losing Xu Nian no longer frightened her?
No.
Impossible.
The very thought should have terrified her.
And that…
Was exactly what frightened her now.
She was terrified that one day she might no longer fear losing Xu Nian at all.
