- I Sent You to Take the College Entrance Exam, and You Ended Up Solving a Murder Case?!
- Chapter 33 - I Have a Girlfriend
After the meal, Chen Mo felt a wave of drowsiness wash over him.
He returned to his room.
The room was exactly as he left it, spotless, and the bedding had been aired out and smelled of sunshine.
Chen Mo lay on the bed, feeling the softness beneath him, with the indistinct sounds of his family washing dishes and chatting downstairs in his ears.
Peaceful and reassuring.
After dinner, as the summer heat gradually subsided, the family moved bamboo chairs to the yard to cool off.
“Amo, have you thought about your marriage since you came back this time?”
Shi Xiaoman, fanning herself with a palm-leaf fan, suddenly asked a question.
The air fell silent for a moment.
Chen Dachuan also looked over; this was a question the elderly couple had wanted to ask for a long time.
Chen Zhe and Chen Yan also perked up their ears, looking on with gossip in their eyes.
Chen Mo smiled and did not avoid the question.
“Actually… I have a girlfriend.”
“What?!”
The courtyard erupted in chaos. Chen Yan was the most excited and jumped up from her chair.
“Bro! When did you get a girlfriend? I had no idea! Which girl was that crazy?”
Chen Mo glanced at her helplessly.
“Wen Fei, a classmate from high school.”
“Wen Fei?” Chen Zhe thought for a moment, then his eyes lit up. “Is she the top student and campus belle who got into Tsinghua and Peking University back then?”
“Yes, it’s her.” Chen Mo nodded. “She’s currently pursuing her master’s degree at Tsinghua or Peking University.”
“A master’s graduate from Tsinghua or Peking University?”
Shi Xiaoman and Chen Dachuan exchanged a glance, their joy fading and replaced by worry.
“Amo, she’s a top student from Tsinghua or Peking University. With our family’s background… won’t she look down on us?”
Shi Xiaoman’s voice betrayed a lack of confidence.
Their family runs a breakfast shop. Although their son became a policeman, wouldn’t those cultured people think he’s a boor?
“Yes,” Chen Dachuan frowned as well, “Isn’t the cultural gap a bit too big?”
Chen Mo knew what they were worried about.
“Dad, Mom, you’re overthinking it.”
He comforted her, saying, “Times have changed. We don’t care about those things anymore. Besides, your son is just as good as you are.”
“I am now the captain of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Municipal Public Security Bureau, a section-level cadre. I own a house and a car in Shucheng, which is more than enough for her, a master’s student.”
Shi Xiaoman and Chen Dachuan felt a weight lifted from their hearts.
“That’s right! My brother is amazing!” Chen Yan echoed with admiration.
“Alright, alright, it’s good that you have a partner.”
Chen Dachuan waved his hand, a smile returning to his face. “When will you bring it back for your aunt and uncle to see?”
“Soon.”
As they were talking, Chen Dachuan, with his sharp eyes, spotted Chen Mo’s Audi parked at the gate of the courtyard.
“Amo, is there anything else in your trunk?”
Chen Mo was taken aback.
“Dad, you have a really sharp eye.”
He stood up, opened the trunk, and sure enough, there were several exquisite gift bags inside.
Just like the things she bought for her own family, they were all specially supplied Zhonghua cigarettes, Maotai liquor, and a set of cosmetics with packaging that looked very expensive.
“Is this also for us?” Chen Yan asked curiously.
“Dream on.” Chen Mo tapped her on the head. “This is for your future sister-in-law’s family.”
He confessed, “I plan to visit her home tomorrow.”
Shi Xiaoman and Chen Dachuan’s expressions immediately turned serious.
“Going tomorrow? So soon?”
“Yes, I made an appointment with her.”
Chen Dachuan pondered for a moment, then stood up, walked to Chen Mo’s side, and patted him on the shoulder.
“When you get there, be polite, sweet-talking, and quick-witted.”
“However,” he changed his tone, becoming serious.
“Don’t be too humble, we don’t need to ask anyone for anything.”
“If their family doesn’t approve of you and feels you’ve been wronged, then come back. There are plenty of fish in the sea.”
“Dad, I know.” Chen Mo felt a warmth in his heart.
“Brother, I’ll go with you! I’ll back you up!” Chen Yan volunteered, raising her hand.
“What are you going there for? To cause trouble?”
The whole family unanimously rejected her.
Chen Yan immediately pouted, looking aggrieved.
The next day, before dawn, Chen Mo woke up.
He changed into his sportswear and ran a lap along the familiar old roads of the county town.
This is the familiar, everyday world he knows best.
After his run, he didn’t rest; he went straight to help out at his family’s breakfast shop.
Kneading the dough, cooking it, and packaging it – the movements are fluid and effortless, a skill ingrained in their very being.
Chen Mo was busy until 10 a.m., when the store’s peak hours had passed, before he took a shower and changed into a clean and neat casual outfit.
After saying goodbye to his parents, he got in his car and drove towards the only villa area in the county.
Wenfei’s house is right there.
The car was stopped by security guards at the entrance of the villa area.
“Hello, who are you looking for?”
“I’m looking for Wen Fei; I’ve made an appointment with her.”
The security guard made a phone call to confirm, and a few minutes later, the barrier slowly rose.
Chen Mo drove the car in and immediately saw a figure standing in front of a villa not far away, eagerly waiting.
When she saw Chen Mo’s car, her eyes lit up, and she jogged over to greet him.
As soon as Chen Mo parked the car and got out, a soft, fragrant body threw itself into his arms.
“You’ve finally arrived!”
Wenfei hugged his waist, her voice full of joy.
Chen Mo smiled and hugged her back, kissing her on her smooth forehead.
Just then, his keen professional intuition made him subconsciously look up and glance at the window on the second floor of the villa.
The curtains moved slightly.
He could clearly see a man and a woman standing by the window watching them.
They are Wenfei’s parents.
Everything that just happened was seen.
Chen Mo’s heart skipped a beat, and his face flushed slightly.
“My parents are upstairs,” Wen Fei said softly, sticking out her tongue as she stepped out of his arms.
“…I saw it.” Chen Mo felt a little guilty.
He took a deep breath and pulled out the four prepared gifts from the trunk.
Cigarettes, alcohol, and a set of La Mer products.
“Let’s go, even an ugly daughter-in-law has to meet her in-laws eventually.”
“You’re the ugly daughter-in-law!” Wen Fei was amused by him, reached out and took his arm, leading him towards the door.
The door opened.
A middle-aged couple sat on the sofa in the living room.
Upon seeing them enter, she immediately stood up with a broad smile; it was Wenfei’s mother, Kang Li.
“Oh, is that Xiao Mo? Come in, come in!”
The man next to her had a stern face.
This is Wen Fei’s father, Wen Minde.
Chen Mo’s heart sank slightly.
This father-in-law seems difficult to deal with.
“Hello, Uncle. Hello, Auntie.” Chen Mo immediately put on his most standard smile and greeted them politely.
Kang Li warmly accepted the things from his hands, “You’ve come all this way, don’t be so kind as to bring so many things!”
Chen Mo then handed over the set of La Mer products.
“Auntie, this is my first time visiting, and I don’t know what you like.”
“I heard from Wenfei that you have good skin, so I took the liberty of buying you a set of skincare products. I hope you won’t mind.”
Kang Li’s eyes lit up when she saw the familiar dark blue packaging.
“Oh dear, I can’t accept this! This stuff isn’t cheap!”
Although he said that, he couldn’t hide the smile on his face, clearly extremely satisfied.
No woman doesn’t love beauty.
Chen Mo breathed a sigh of relief; he had passed the first hurdle.
He then placed the cigarettes and alcohol on the coffee table, saying, “Uncle, this is just a small token of my appreciation.”
Wen Minde simply grunted an “Mmm” through his nose, without even lifting his eyelids, his gaze remaining fixed on the newspaper in his hand.
But he did not refuse.
That’s enough.
“Dad, Xiao Mo is talking to you.” Wen Fei shook her father’s arm with some dissatisfaction.
Wen Minde then put down his newspaper and looked up at Chen Mo.
“Please sit down.”
The two simple words carried an unquestionable sense of command.
“Come on, Xiao Mo, sit here.” Kang Li warmly pulled Chen Mo, trying to ease the awkwardness.
Chen Mo followed Wen Fei toward the sofa, and while Wen Minde was drinking tea with his head down, he quickly gave Wen Fei a wink.
That means: What’s wrong with your dad?
He thought his actions were very discreet.
However, the moment his gaze fell upon him, Wen Minde, who had been drinking tea, suddenly stopped.
“snort.”
A soft, albeit not loud, snort rang out clearly in the living room.
