  3. Chapter 1 - What are you doing?

In June, the sun blazed fiercely.

There is only one week left until the college entrance examination.

Chen Mo dragged his tired body home.

He was an orphan whose parents died early, and this old tile-roofed house with a small courtyard was the only memento they left behind.

As soon as I stepped into the backyard, a piercing creaking sound came from there.

Chen Mo frowned and looked in the direction of the sound.

I saw my neighbor, Aunt Liu, struggling to pry open his wooden fence.

“Aunt Liu, what are you doing?”

Chen Mo’s voice was filled with anger.

Aunt Liu was startled, and the iron crowbar in her hand fell to the ground with a clatter.

Instead of feeling guilty at all, she confidently put her hands on her hips and rolled her eyes.

“What am I doing? Chen Mo, you little ingrate, your lousy fence has encroached on my property.”

“What’s wrong with me taking it apart?”

Chen Mo laughed in exasperation.

This fence was built by his parents more than ten years ago. They’ve lived peacefully together for so many years. How did it suddenly encroach on her land?

“Aunt Liu, please be reasonable. The position of this fence has never been moved.”

“Reason? I am the reason!”

Aunt Liu picked up the crowbar and pointed to a stone at the foot of the fence.

“See that? The original territory was here!”

“Your family has taken a foot of my land without any reason, and I must take it back today!”

Chen Mo felt annoyed and flustered looking at her unreasonable and domineering manner.

With the college entrance exam just around the corner, every minute and second was incredibly precious to him, and he simply didn’t have the energy to get entangled with this kind of person.

But this house was left to him by his parents, and he wouldn’t give up an inch of it.

Just as the two were locked in a stalemate, a deep voice came from not far away.

“Hey, what’s all the noise about so early in the morning?”

Chen Mo looked back and immediately breathed a sigh of relief.

“Uncle Da Chuan”.

The visitor was Chen Dachuan, a distant relative of his father’s and also his neighbor.

Chen Dachuan ran a breakfast shop in town and was a kind and honest man.

Since Chen Mo’s parents passed away, he and his wife Shi Xiaoman have taken the best care of him.

When Aunt Liu saw Chen Dachuan, her arrogance subsided somewhat, but she still couldn’t hold back her words.

“Da Chuan, you’ve come at the right time! You be the judge! Chen Mo’s fence is encroaching on my land. Shouldn’t I tear it down?”

Chen Dachuan walked over, glanced at the fence that had been pried open and was on the verge of collapse, and frowned.

He slowly took out his smartphone and swiped his finger across the screen a few times.

“Aunt Liu, we’ve been neighbors for decades. It’s not worth ruining our relationship over something like this.”

He handed the phone to Aunt Liu.

“Look, this is a photo I took ten years ago when I first got a new phone.”

“I took these photos in the courtyard when your daughter got married.”

“The fence and the boundary were captured perfectly in the photo.”

The photo shows the new red brick wall standing between Chen Mo’s old wooden fence and his home.

The boundary stone that served as a marker is clearly visible, and its location is exactly the same as it is now.

The fence did not cross the boundary at all.

Aunt Liu’s face turned pale and then red in an instant.

She didn’t expect that Chen Dachuan still had such old photos.

But she couldn’t bring herself to admit her mistake so easily.

“Photos…who knows if photos are photoshopped! These days, phones can do anything!”

She started throwing a tantrum.

The smile on Chen Dachuan’s face faded.

“Okay, if you think the photos are fake, that’s fine too.”

“Let’s go find the village secretary now; he has the original blueprints from back then for dividing up the residential land.”

“It’s all in black and white; no one can fake it.”

“We’ll have the village officials come and measure it with a ruler. If our family has really encroached on your land…”

“I’ll personally dismantle the fence for you and then apologize to you. How about that?”

Looking for the village party secretary?

Aunt Liu immediately wilted.

She just wanted to take advantage of Chen Mo because he was a student and his parents had died.

If she really makes a scene at the village committee, she’ll be the one who loses face.

“I……”

Aunt Liu opened her mouth, but couldn’t utter a single word for a long time.

She glared fiercely at Chen Mo.

“Hmph! I guess I’m just unlucky! I have nothing to say to you outsiders!”

After saying that, she picked up the crowbar from the ground and slunk back to her own home.

The farce has finally come to an end.

Chen Dachuan sighed, walked to the fence, and reached out to shake the loosened planks.

“This woman is becoming more and more unreasonable.”

He turned around and patted Chen Mo on the shoulder.

“It’s alright, don’t take it to heart. I’ll come over this weekend to reinforce the fence for you. Your most important task right now is to study.”

As he spoke, he took out a still-warm plastic bag from the cloth bag he was carrying.

“Your Aunt Xiaoman made some meat buns this morning and specially asked me to bring them to you.”

“If you get hungry while studying at night, have a snack. Don’t ruin your health by staying up too late.”

Chen Mo took the heavy bag of buns, and a warm current instantly flowed from his palms throughout his body.

He recalled that over the years, Uncle Dachuan and Aunt Xiaoman had been like family to him.

When the light bulb in the house broke, Chen Dachuan stood on a stool to change it for him.

During holidays and festivals, Shi Xiaoman would bring him steaming hot dumplings so he wouldn’t feel lonely and isolated.

On one occasion, when he fell ill with a high fever, it was Chen Dachuan who rode his tricycle to take him to the town’s health center in the middle of the night.

He remembered all these acts of kindness.

“Thank you, Uncle Dachuan, and please thank Aunt Xiaoman for me as well.”

Chen Mo’s voice was a little hoarse.

“No need to thank me, we’re family, no need for formalities.”

Chen Dachuan laughed heartily and then gave further instructions.

“The college entrance exam is coming soon, don’t get distracted by these trivial matters.”

“Getting into a good university is the greatest way to thank us and the best way to comfort your parents.”

Chen Mo nodded heavily.

Yes, get into a good university.

This is the only thing he can do right now, and it’s what he has to do.

After seeing Chen Dachuan off, Chen Mo returned to the house.

Night was falling.

He sat at his desk, opening a thick math textbook.

But the scenes that happened during the day kept playing in his mind like a movie.

He stared at a seemingly simple function problem for ten minutes, but his mind was still a complete mess.

Damn it!

Chen Mo slammed his pen on the table in frustration.

It’s only a week left, how can he be distracted at this crucial moment?

He closed his eyes and tried to take a deep breath, hoping to clear away all those distracting thoughts.

But the more he tried to concentrate, the clearer Aunt Liu’s words, “ungrateful little devil,” echoed in his ears.

Just when he was extremely upset.

“bite–“

A mechanical voice echoed deep within his mind.

Chen Mo suddenly opened his eyes.

What was that sound?

Am I hallucinating?

He nervously looked around; the room was quiet except for the occasional chirping of insects outside the window.

“Ding—Justice System Activating…”

The voice rang out again, even clearer than before.

This time, Chen Mo was certain he hadn’t misheard.

The sound came directly from his head!

Immediately afterwards, a semi-transparent panel that only he could see appeared out of thin air in front of him.

[Justice System]

[Host: Chen Mo]

[Binding…]

[Binding successful!]

Chen Mo froze, his eyes wide open like saucers.

The kind of protagonist’s “golden finger” in novels?

Is he hallucinating because of the immense pressure of the college entrance exam?

He pinched his thigh hard.

“hiss–“

A distinct pain shot through me, but the blue panel in front of me showed no sign of disappearing.

All of this is true.

Before he could recover from the shock, the text on the panel refreshed again.

[Host has successfully completed the newbie mission: Protecting personal rights]

[Task Description: In a land dispute with a neighbor.]

[They successfully defended the integrity of their homestead, preventing the attempts of criminals from succeeding.]

[Task Rating: C-level. Note: The task was mainly completed with external assistance; the host’s contribution was relatively low.]

[Task rewards are being distributed…]

[Congratulations, host, you have obtained the Focus Enhancement Buff.]

[Effect: Within 2 hours, the host’s mental focus is highly concentrated, external interference is blocked, and mental clarity is increased by 100%]

Chen Mo looked at the words on the panel and was at a loss for words.

That awful argument with Aunt Liu during the day was actually considered a task?

And the rating is only C, the system’s evaluation is really… fair.

If Uncle Da Chuan hadn’t shown up in time, he really wouldn’t know how he would have ended things today.

His gaze fell on the reward.

A focus-boosting buff?

Isn’t this exactly what he needs right now?
